It’s a new year, so I think it’s the perfect time to share a logo I haven’t shared before. This is for an indie comic called Auld Lang Syne by @patloikagram. It’s a slice-of-life story with a mythic twist. Without revealing too much, the story revolves around memories being erased and is set in New York City during New Year’s Eve.
🗽
The NYC influence is evident in the logotype, which uses Helvetica—a typeface synonymous with NYC subway signs. The arrow in the “D” is also inspired by those signs. Additionally, the typeface starts bold and gradually becomes thinner and fades away, symbolizing the story’s theme of memories being erased. In my concept sketches, I also explored runes, space-time elements, and the iconic Times Square Ball.
🗽
It’s been almost four years since I created this, and I’m stoked to finally share it. This project was especially meaningful to me, as it’s both unique in its approach and a nod to my roots—I started my design career creating logos for independent comics. Revisiting that foundation was a blast, and I hope to work on more comic logos like this in the future. taken in New York City by @chrismaze.creative

I recently took on my toughest client yet…

…my 11-year-old daughter.

She started soccer and I was asked to design her team’s logo. Naturally, I couldn’t say no, but the kicker (pun intended) was that I had only a few days to create a full-color logo, while juggling other tight deadlines. The team’s name, Tsunamis, and their navy blue jerseys meant that I knew I had a cooler color palette to work with. Check!

When I asked my daughter what kind of logo she wanted—icon, type-based, or container—she paused and looked at me dead in the eye and sternly said,

“It just needs to look cool, Dad.”

That was the extent of her feedback, and when pressed for more, I received eye rolls. Many, many eye rolls, some attitude, and little direction. So the challenge was on!

Like I do at the start of all of my projects, I took out my sketchbook and pens, and started sketching away. I sketched out two pages of concepts, balancing traditional sports logos with modern, minimalist designs. After a brief “meeting” with my daughter and my wife (the real boss and my personal art director), we narrowed it down to a few ideas, and I built two final logos in Adobe Illustrator for my daughter to choose from.

In the end, she picked the sports team-style logo. Her final verdict?

“It’s cool.”

Client: RealPage
Project: Stay Ahead Campaign Concept
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

Designed in collaboration with Charlie Pitcher (@charliepitcherdesigns), Jacky Cipres (@cipres_design), and Kano Aguilera.

🔈Sound on. The proposal and our concept rationale lies within the post. This concept was produced internally over the course of 2-3 days with really long hours. We had a tight deadline and a challenge to produce a concept that would potentially lead the new year of RealPage (2019). Without going into too much detail, despite working late in the early morning with my crew for a few days to meet deadline, it was a good time! I personally felt like we produced a killer concept that utilized RealPage’s icon in a unique way while pushing the brand forward. Although they went with another concept in the end, I’m really proud of this one, even in its conceptual format. by @chrismaze.creative

Client: Continental Properties
Project: Muse Milford Brand
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

Located in one of the most highly rated residential towns in Connecticut, Muse offers spacious brand new Milford, CT apartment homes available in a wide variety of one, two, and three bedroom floor plans. Residents enjoy easy access to multiple beaches, along with a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Muse is less than 1 mile to the Metro North Train Station with trains regularly leaving for New York City, Stanford and Norwalk.

The direction we were given for this brand is that it needed to be modern for their demographic: professionals, couples, and small families. Adopting the orange color from the logo, I created a simple color palette derived from it which allows this brand to stand out amongst the competitors. The primary logo itself utilizes a square container. I had decided to use dot design elements because I felt the roundness of the dots helped break the geometric nature of the logo and the layouts. In some instances I broke the type of the logo out of the container where appropriate. I also overlaid these elements across images and clipped some lifestyle photos to give a sense of movement with my layouts which allowed images to break free from the grid system. Its palette, design, and elements gave some life to this development and its surrounding area while illustrating the bright and easy going nature of this property. This brand was definitely a lot of fun to build! by @chrismaze.creative

Client: Raintree Partners
Project: Prado West Brand
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

When it comes to comfort, class, and convenience, Prado West delivers on all fronts. Situated off of the PCH in Dana Point, California, with expansive views of the marina, this brand new, mixed-use multifamily community provides its residents with an impressive selection of on-site amenities and unbeatable access to retail and lifestyle services.

When creating this brand we were tasked to highlight its picturesque location and impressive style. When I went on a site visit to meet with the client, they wanted high-end visuals, unique elements, and appropriate messaging. They wanted a brand that captured the essence of this community's coastal charm and boutique vibe. To reflect that, I immediately went with a navy and gold color palette. These represent the California coast and the luxurious vibe respectively. The simple and modern font paired with a more personal handwritten font aligned with the concept’s personal approach that I wanted to convey. The lifestyle photos were treated in a way which complemented the simple color palette of the brand. They were specifically chosen to reflect the coastal lifestyle. I’ve also included textures and close-ups of nautical items to help visually paint the picture of its coastal luxe vibe further.

I came up with the tagline, “Just Be” because the resident can be anything they would like at this property. The tagline lent itself to be distinctive with each resident who lived there.

Just Be Coastal.
Just Be Fresh.
Just Be Active.
Just Be Yourself. by @chrismaze.creative

Project: Ross + Peak Logo and Brand
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

Ross + Peak is an apartment community in Dallas, Texas. It features studio, one and two bedroom floor plans and their homes come with upscale interior features and community amenities catered to all walks of life. Ross + Peak is located right on the cusp of Downtown and Old East Dallas, on the corner of Ross Avenue and North Peak Street which also places them in the heart of so much retail, restaurants and entertainment so that everything is within reach.

The logo offers a unique duality with the color scheme designed to match the two street names represented – Ross and Peak. I’ve chosen a more modern approach by utilizing a ‘plus’ sign to represent the word ‘and’. Finally, the divider within the plus sign can also represent an intersection as it may relate to the location of the community.

This concept and its tagline is, “+ You” which is very modular and can translate to headlines and the like (example: Comfort + You). The strategy behind this concept was to tell a story with the ‘+’ icon from the logo in a way where it can stand alone as a notable mark when shown without the community name. The logo has been dissected into various design elements that can be used in a multitude of ways when it comes to the design, layout, and overall tone of the Ross + Peak brand. by @chrismaze.creative

Client: 29th Street Capital
Project: Maven on Broadway Brand
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

Maven on Broadway is a brand new community located in Sacramento, CA, just minutes from The Sacramento River and Midtown. They offer 1- and 2- bedroom homes with light and bright interiors, maximizing space to include all of the finishes residents find to be most important. The community itself features many on-site amenities, such as a public park, event amphitheater, bike paths connecting you to nearby destinations, and a food hall that showcases various cuisines.

After the logo was created it was on me to create the look-and-feel, voice, and tone of Maven on Broadway’s brand. The tagline is, “Lifestyle Defined.” Using that as a foundation I paired our headlines and other call outs with a definition accompanying it so it ties back into the tagline. From there I took the main colors from the logo and expanded it with complimentary swatches. The brand in its entirety is a mix of both classic and modern. The visual strategy behind this concept uses bold font choices to capture one’s attention mixed with a classic type font. The brand uses distressed textures which adds a subtle vintage vibe to the overall aesthetic and acts as subtle saw dust texture which is a nod to its history as an old saw mill. With this concept, we aimed to help educate the prospect. We do this by telling the story of its history along with what the property can offer you today with informational design and lifestyle touches via collateral, marketing signage, and more.

The full website launched recently as well. You can see how the brand elements came together in web format at www.mavenbroadway.com. by @chrismaze.creative

Client: Southern Land Company
Project: Morada Plano Brand
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

“Morada” is the Spanish word for abode, dwelling or stay; from morar, to live or dwell. Morada Plano are luxury urban apartments, conveniently located within the vibrant Arts District and Historic Downtown Plano, Texas. Downtown Plano is a neighborhood known for its local eateries, unique boutiques, and popular arts and entertainment venues. The client informed us that they wanted a brand that was “industrial and hipster while luxurious at the same time.” Inspired by the texture found around Downtown Plano I found that the use of wood was common and used that to help set a foundation for this brand. The use of clean white space and the gold helped balance the luxury and urban of it. The gold line elements and star were dissected from the logo and represent the wood texture and Texas respectively. Those elements paired with the clean white aesthetic provided the client with a balance of urban luxury that they were looking for. You will see how these all came to life with samples of a brochure, stationery, marketing signage, and some promo items. by @chrismaze.creative

Client: RangeWater (formerly Matrix Residential)
Project: Spectrum on Spring Brand Concept
Company: LeaseLabs by RealPage

Spectrum on Spring are luxe apartments with a midtown charm in Atlanta, GA. Midtown Atlanta has a vibrant scene especially with the arts. Midtown is home to Southeast’s largest concentration of cultural venues like the Alliance Theatre, the Altanta Symphony Orchestra, and the High Museum of Art. Since this property is located in the heart of Midtown, I felt this was the perfect project to bring some of my art background to this brand. The brand is vibrant, poppy, and exciting. Some of the backgrounds have a subtle canvas texture which complements the splashes of paint throughout. I felt it gave the brand energy and movement. On top of that, I had some of the lifestyle imagery blending through with illustration. Although this concept didn’t make it through to the final, I did want to share it because it’s one of my favorites. The design they did choose was a perfect blend of pop and luxury. It also taught me a lesson: remember your audience. As much as I tried to mix illustration with design when appropriate on some of these multifamily brand projects, it just wasn’t the correct industry for it. So when working on a project don’t forget to ask the question: who is this for? By doing this, it will allow you to stay focused and produce something that is appropriate for your client. by @chrismaze.creative
