Olivia for Pitchfork šŸ’™

It’s a wonder that Bowen (our Senior Visuals Editor!) and the incredible Collier Schorr trusted me enough to experiment with these beautiful photos and lay them out in a way that bolsters this truly great interview by the one and only Shaad D’Souza. And of course, it’s always so so cool to work on something that features such a great artistšŸ’™(Seriously, name one skip on the album, I dare you)

The 072U Pantone became a bit of a character through the zine. We ended up choosing it because it complemented the photos so well, it’s a fresh take on the colors she typically uses, and all while feeling distinct and additive for every page.

These zines are probably the only projects where I get to collaborate with so many other people, pulling help from every direction. I play a small part of this in the grand scheme of things, and it’s such an honor to put my name alongside such talented and creative people!

How Jay-Z Pushed American Fashion Forward

This was a real beast. So much of our design process was intertwined with the in-depth research on Jay’s visual archive by our Photo Editors, conversations with Edit/Photo about what to highlight in Frazier’s interview, attention to detail by the keen-eyes of our Production and Design teams, and everyone collaborating to explore how to compile all of this into an exciting and rich reading experience for anyone picking up the mag. (All while juggling other fun projects….This was done start-to-finish in the span of 2 weeks) Really could not have brought this to life alone, I’m so grateful for the whole team! šŸ–¤

if i had to consult anyone on building my dream closet, its 100% gotta be @yanggoh and @samuelhine

Finally getting around to posting some GQ print stories I’ve worked on over the past few months! It’s always a lot of fun piecing together these catalog-y and gridded stories. There’s always a lot to consider with what to feature prominently, how to keep the reading experience dynamic and coherent, and trying to place little pockets of human touch and style behind all of these systems. We crowd sourced the hand writing from @geraldortiz @kelseyniziolek @keirnov @eva.baron and myself, for the editors’ notes throughout!

Thanks as always to my GQ design and art directors for trusting me to work this one out and helping to push this across the finish line! @keirnov @michael_houtz

Selects šŸ¤– with a hint of terminals and robotic doom šŸ”«

I watched The Terminator this past week and I was obsessed with the opening titles type…so after a quick search, I found that someone graciously did a deep dive on Fontsinuse.com of the font used, Bessellen by the Visual Graphics Corporation in 1973. It was never digitized officially by the VGC but V.Sarela made a faithful recreation in 2011 called Modern Vision, and that’s what you’re seeing here.

The Terminator titles were designed and animated by Ernest D. Farino, who’s worked on VFX, Animation, and Graphics for a ton of iconic movies. Def do some digging into his imdb if you’re into these Terminator titles, his work is awesome.

Also! There are a bunch of little easter egg messages in this one for the eagle eyed šŸ‘€

Here’s a sort of organic glitch particle effect for this week’s selects 🧔

Made in @cavalry.app

Selects is a weekly playlist by @pitchfork staff. Every week features bespoke art for music streaming services, socials, and web.

The pixel effect is loosely inspired by the particle effects in Metal Gear Solid 1 and other PS1 era games, like the snow falling or the chaff grenade blips

It’s a Noise-affected text object, then a Grid duplicator for the pixel effect and a Sub-Mesh duplicator for the tracker boxes on each letter .(Funny enough, the type treatment kinda ends up looking like the Metal Gear Solid 4 brush stroke typeface, not intentional!) by @chrispanicker

Another week, another selects🩷

Voxelize + path offset! That’s kinda all there is to this one!

I’ve been really liking the effect of scaling something with the same pixel resolution so there’s a bunch of weird fragmenty aliasing going on, might lean into that in a future one of these by @chrispanicker

Kind of a techy, glitchy grid for this week’s Selects 🧪

Made in @cavalry.app

Selects is a weekly staff-curated playlist by @pitchfork . Every week features bespoke art for music streaming services, socials, and web.

Just a couple of grid duplicators that have square shape layers inside, then a ton of arrays that have their index iterating based on Noise effects!

…ik that’s a ton of cavalry gibberish but generally it’s just a bunch of controlled chaos with variations in stroke, font, color, etc by @chrispanicker

@chrispanicker is the sole designer behind @pitchfork’s zines, year-end lists and weekly Selects art. He also designs for @gq.

His projects can look disparate, from the cover-story zines to the Best of the Year lists and weekly columns, but the throughline is experimentation. Selects, the staff-curated playlist he calls his favourite, is where it happens. It’s a low-pressure weekly blank canvas for motion, glitch and analogue animation, and what he learns there feeds the higher-pressure work.

In our interview, he walks through building temporary identities for the year-end lists, scripting Photoshop and InDesign to render hundreds of artist cards, and where his glitchy, jittery aesthetic began.

I love muuuuuusic šŸŽ¶

This week’s selects featuring @rosadvera ā€˜s super cool typeface based on music notation symbols, Sonata, paired with some classical music notation fonts you might recognize from sheet music (Finale Ash and Finale Jazz) Ash and Jazz were on every chart from my high school jazz band class šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Selects is a weekly staff-curated playlist by @pitchfork . Every week features bespoke art for music streaming services, socials, and web.

Lots and lots of duplicators. One for the lines of the staff, one for each note and dynamic (with Text objects that have String arrays for the music note characters), and one for the grid of ā€œSelectsā€ in the Ash, Jazz and more (Text boxes using a Typeface array, iterated with the duplicator)

And of course, the cellular noise to shake things up a bit by @chrispanicker

Mistral (this font) is kinda sick šŸ”

I’ve been trying to remember the name for a while now and I finally decided to look up ā€œDrive movie fontā€ and a 2013 DaFont.com forum poster came to the rescue. (In hindsight it’s probably more known from NWA lol)
