Last week, I resigned from my position at Theatre Works.

Rather than reflecting on the challenges of the past two years (of which, there were plenty, but artists wallow enough!) I'm left feeling an immense gratitude that, in the midst of an independent arts infrastructure crisis, I got to have a voice in modelling what sustainable practice could look like. I got to advocate for the relevance, quality and necessity of the independent theatre coming out of Melbourne right now. I got to have a swing at how I thought things, within our industry, could be better. While I'm sad to move on from team TW, I leave with an unambiguous feeling of accomplishment. I entered the Theatre Works community as a presenting artist, and I get to leave it knowing I've played a role in making it even better for the artists who present work after me. That's a really special feeling to take with me.

Thank you, Team Theatre Works, for everything we accomplished together. My love to our artists, keep pushing. Here's to what's next 🥂 taken in Theatre Works by @chrispatrickhansen

You are the kindest, most professional and most thoughtful actors with whom I’ve ever had the privilege. This show lived on the connection and energy you shared, and wouldn’t have been half the wonder it came to be without your commitment to each other, this work, this process.

@charrdproduction @jacquesca Thank you for working so tirelessly to bring this to life. It’s not lost on me the hell you throw yourselves into to support this work, and I can’t tell you what it means.

@theatreworksstkilda, and specifically @__dizzie__di @adamgardner26 @____jady_x thank you for all your support, both as coworkers and as friends. Without Theatre Works and its artist-first model, my last 3 works could never have happened. I owe so much of where I am now to this venue and what it does for independent artists. The support offered and opportunities given have made TW an irreplaceable cog in the indie arts Ecosystem. Nothing else compares 🫡❤️ Artists over all.

Probably about time to talk about that show I did 👾

BLACKPILL: REDUX
(but really more of a ramble about both versions and how I’m feeling leaving them behind)

Presented by Theatre Works @theatreworksstkilda and Paracosm @prods.by.paracosm

In the years before BLACKPILL. lived its first two lives, I had declared the project dead and buried several times. Is the focus on Incels too niche? Is radical misogyny too much for one show to bite off? What role does my male voice play in this conversation? Which pieces of this puzzle make up the story that is mine to tell?

But something kept drawing me back to engaging with this discourse. I fundamentally believed that a dramatic unpacking of the disillusioned male rabbit hole, told through the black comedic mask of their ‘dark humour’ and bitter vitriol, had a place in the public conversation around this issue. In all the research I did, I kept finding that everyone wanted to talk about the fact that inceldom was growing, but no one wanted to talk about how. I get it - showing how these arguments appeal feels pretty close to endorsing or excusing them - but, to me, the entire fight in dismantling the incel ideology lives and dies in understanding the pipeline of lies they are fed.

BLACKPILL. and BLACKPILL: REDUX posed questions with uncomfortable answers. They made their point unapologetically and challenged the notion that small budgets mean small scale. I owe my job at @theatreworksstkilda to the success of BLACKPILL. I owe the rebirth of my company to this show. I don’t want to get to ‘onwards and upwards’ without appreciating this process and everything it did for me.

That said - onwards and upwards. Will BLACKPILL. come back? Maybe. Not soon. I’m so creatively exhausted on every inch of this show. It would need to evolve again first. For now, I’m excited for new things. I’ve just finished 4 incredible days of auditions, and with callbacks on Sunday, I feel totally creatively renewed. Thank you to everyone who saw BLACKPILL., everyone who worked on it, and everyone who made it what it became.

Can’t express how grateful I am to be invited back to QACI tonight to receive the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award. Thank you to the wonderful selection panel who decided my path embodies the spirit, rigour and collaboration for which QACI is so well known. At QACI, I was given the seeds that planted the trees I climb now. I can’t wait for our paths to cross again, so I can continue to bear witness to the incredible talent, kindness and inquisitive thinking being fostered at the Academy. Took our last trip to the Garden of Broken Things / Small Acts Primary today as our Book Week tour through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia came to a close.
