Big congrats to @chrispauldaniels for his screening and Q&A at @britishfilminstitute yesterday evening as part of the Experimenta programme organised by Will Fowler.
It was such a treat to see our footage on the big screen at NFT3 through Chris's incredible work "Is There Anybody There?" and "Give Yourself A Round Of Applause"

REVIEW: Artist, writer and editor of The Fourdrinier Josephine Manby reviews Lowry’s latest exhibition Curtain Up. Moving away from the concept of the spectacle, the exhibition instead foregrounds the audience’s participatory experience. Reflecting Lowry’s history as a cultural institution that platforms a range of art forms, from dance and comedy to visual art and theatre, the show responds thoughtfully to the wider context of the venue itself. The concept of collective witnessing is realised through three newly commissioned works by Ulla von Brandenburg, Rowland Hill and Chris Paul Daniels.

Showcasing two films made with @nwfilmarchive - the first is ‘Is there anybody there?’ made for @homemcr with music by @massonix808 and voice by @alicia.prowse for a solo show curated by @clarissacorfe

Senior Lecturer in Filmmaking at SODA, Chris Paul Daniels, has created an experimental new film that will feature in Curtain Up, a group exhibition at The Lowry that explores how artists capture the anticipation, heightened emotion and shared energy of being in an audience.

His film, Give Yourself a Round of Applause, uses more than 50 pieces of production footage from Manchester Met’s North West Film Archive (NWFA) spanning almost 80 years. The clips range from school plays and home videos to amateur theatre productions from the late 1920s to today.

Daniels said: “Give Yourself a Round of Applause is about the power of being in an audience. I used a montage of existing material to create something new. It has its own story, but it uses a variety of films as a springboard to tell a different narrative that reflects on the present day.

Daniels will also take part in Double Agents: Play and Performance in Digital Worlds, a monthly seminar series run by SODA in collaboration with FACT exploring the social, political and cultural impact of advanced digital technologies. His joint seminar on April 30 will discuss the making of his work, including this latest project.
