Introducing The Peña Collective.

A New York-based cultural platform rooted in collecting, curatorial practice and dialogue.

We believe art becomes more meaningful when we understand the people, places, histories and lived experiences around it.

The Peña Collective is a space to champion artists and ideas we believe in, share the stories behind the work, and create conversations around identity, memory, belonging and contemporary culture.

Some of that will take the form of exhibitions. Some through collecting, publishing, collaboration and conversation.

The common thread is simple:

Art in context.
Culture in dialogue.

And this is only the beginning.

Next: NO TENGO, a new body of work by Ugly Fernandez, presented by The Peña Collective.

Coming soon.

Soundtrack: Michel Camilo, “Caribe.”

“NO TENGO AMOR SANO”

We inherit more than our mother’s eyes and our father’s hands. We inherit their fears, their pride, and the pain they never had the words to explain.

In Dominican homes, love often came with a “cállate y no llores,” a “tú crees que la vida es fácil,” or a “yo me sacrifiqué por ustedes.”

We watched our mother’s aguantar por los hijos, our fathers swallow their emotions.

We learned that love meant staying, even when it hurt. That forgiveness didn’t need an apology, and that what happened inside the house stayed inside the house.

And so we grow up carrying wounds that were never ours to begin with, only to fall in love with someone carrying wounds of their own.

Two people trying to give each other a love neither has ever known.

Because sometimes we don’t hurt the people we love because we lack love, but because we learned love through pain.

Y lo más triste es que nos enseñaron a aguantar el amor, pero nunca a vivirlo en paz.

“All Dominicans Go To Heaven”

For the first nine months of our existence, everything is taken care of. We are sheltered, nourished, and loved before we even understand what love is. We exist without expectation, without judgment, without knowing the weight of the world.

Then we are born.

And slowly, life begins to shape us. We inherit more than our parents’ features. We inherit their sacrifices, their fears, their traditions, and their understanding of what it means to survive.

Growing up Dominican, you learn that love isn’t always spoken. Sometimes it’s a plate of food waiting for you, a grandmother’s prayer, the sound of merengue coming from another room, or a mother telling you to be careful before you leave the house.

We spend our lives becoming people shaped by the ones who came before us. Carrying pieces of a country, a culture, and a history that existed long before we did.

And somewhere along the way, we begin searching for the same peace we experienced before we were born. A place where we were loved without having to earn it. Where we belonged without having to prove it.

Maybe that’s what heaven is.

Not necessarily a place above us, but a return to where we came from. To love in its purest form. To something greater than ourselves. To God, however we choose to understand Him.

We never asked to be here, yet we’re given this beautiful, complicated opportunity to exist.

And when our time comes, perhaps death isn’t the end of that experience.

Perhaps it’s simply going home.

All Dominicans Go To Heaven.
