I’m briefly back in this old studio making some newer, larger work. I have yet to title these paintings (or finish them completely) and will likely not title them for a few weeks or months.

I find the task of naming artworks excruciating because my paintings are not vessels to advance particular ideas or oblique narratives. The necessity of titles is really about ascribing meaning. Other things are completely excused from this questioning… taken in Manhattan, New York by @chrisrodrilopez

SOLD — I spent all winter trying to get this painting right, only for it to come together all at once in a single session late at night a few weeks ago —

— and now it’s hanging in friends’ home in Brooklyn 🙂‍↔️

reading aesthetics can be weird, but Bachelard said the house is a body // equal parts cradle, backdrop, refuge // to re-inhabit its rooms is to re-inhabit one’s own inner life // If there were no trust in the world, would a nest ever be built?

I read a lot of Jill Lepore and Paul Bloom’s public writing on AI and the consequences of moving towards an artificial state of reality / government. They write extensively about how our information ecosystem has been redesigned by a handful of companies to lead us down rabbit holes, into outrage cycles, towards ideological and aesthetic extremes and into emotional overload. The answer is likely not more tech — it does not seem that LLMs can cure our loneliness or algorithms will restore our sense of a shared future.

This feeling, that kind of fog, has been my artistic point of departure for a few years now. Painting is a personal escape from it and an effort to translate some of the fury I observe and internalize while caught in between the fold of human and machine chatter. Not to explain it in a literal or direct way, but to process it and respond to it visually.
