Conducting my cue for the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop. I remain forever humbled that my pals at @ascapscreen took a chance on a rube like me - this experience was a dream come true, and it finally gave me the confidence I needed to move forward in my career. Tonight, I’m sitting back in awe of my fellow participants and all that they’ve accomplished these past five years despite the various wrenches thrown our way. You’re my heroes, and I’m so glad we got to do this together. 💪 taken in Newman Scoring Stage by @chrisryanmusic

This summer, I had a blast writing the main titles music for ‘Coup!’ starring Peter Sarsgaard and Billy Magnussen. Directed by @austinmstark and Joseph Schuman, ‘Coup!’ takes place at the height of the 1918 flu pandemic, and debuted at the Venice Film Festival this September. I can’t wait for you all to see this film - it’s one of my favorites in quite some time.

Endless thanks to the dream team (!!) that helped bring this to life - expertly performed by @budapestscoring, conducted by @geoffreypopemusic, orchestrated by @nolanmarkey, with @fieldofreeds on bass flute, mix by Brad Cobb and mastered by @mixermichael. Special thanks to @hmgurny, @anne__hollister at @happybadbungalow, and of course Austin and Joseph for bring me on board! by @chrisryanmusic

My grandmother Kitty passed away from covid in March of 2020. Because of the pandemic, we were never able to give her the send-off she deserved, and it has weighed heavily on my family these past two years. After a long time spent trying to figure out how to celebrate her life, this fall, I enlisted a 65-piece orchestra to help bid her farewell the best way I knew how.

Kitty, or as I called her, Nana, was my connection to music. Some of my earliest memories are of her singing along to the Irish radio. She played fiddle, gifted me my first keyboard, and paid for my piano lessons. She never missed a recital.

On May 5, 1951, a month shy of her twenty-first birthday, my grandmother boarded a ship to America after the loss of her mother. I think often about what that must have been like. The grief of leaving home, the hope for new beginnings. And I think about what it would have been like to be on the pier in Cobh that day, seeing her off. Wishing more than anything for one more day together, but hopeful for calmer shores ahead.

This piece is dedicated to her journey, her fortitude, and the lilting melodies she made me fall in love with.

Until We Meet Again…

When we moved here in 2017, my parents took this pic of me around the block from our new place, and I remember thinking “maybe one day I’ll get to watch a film I scored in that purple movie theater.” It was as close to a distillation of the dream I could come up with at the time.

I think my twenties were marked by a sort of blind optimism and overeagerness - as they are meant to be - and then, the years to follow entailed getting hit over the head repeatedly by the frying pan of reality. But in my mid-thirties, I’ve made it my mission to try to reclaim ~20% of the naivety I took with me to this sometimes brutal, often magical, town. If I’m being honest… I’ve missed it deeply.

Today, it was such a joy to watch @claddaghfilm in a room full of cheering folks at the purple movie theater, around the block from the crooked floors and (inexplicably sponge-painted) hallways that got us through our first few years here. It hasn’t been easy - but the dream’s alive, and so are we. 💜✌️ by @chrisryanmusic

Please join me in wishing the happiest of birthdays to the kindest, handsomest, funniest fella on this side of the Mississippi (*true regardless of which coast we’re on). You all get to see the magic he makes, but I get to see just how hard he works behind the scenes to make it happen, and it is equally awe-inspiring. Whether he’s playing an ancient tree in an improv scene, whipping up a dessert from thin air, or making a room full of people cry-laugh as a storyteller, every day with him on this planet is a joy. Happy birthday, @thatsajellyfish. I love you to the moon and back (famously 9 miles, straight up). by @chrisryanmusic

A quick lil excerpt from my score for ‘Apocalypse Besties,’ which premiered at @tribeca last year. Working with @buckelscantrell @samreecetv and @beckychicoine on this film was an absolute DREAM, and I’m so grateful to them for letting me unleash my inner 90s. Orchestral comedy scores are back, baby!!! Full score avail on my website 😘 by @chrisryanmusic

Hey, I’m Chris. I grew up in NY & now live in LA, where I write music for film & television.

Growing up, I always wanted to be Indiana Jones. But honestly, I was the closeted kid with a speech impediment, who left sleepovers early. Fitting in didn’t come easily. I was bullied for my lisp & started avoiding anything that felt unpredictable.

At 10, my school hosted an overnight trip to Caumsett State Park. I remember feeling nervous, convinced it’d end the way these things always did. But that night, our guides organized a solo nature walk. Each of us had to cross a quiet stretch of snowy woods alone, in complete darkness.

I remember stepping onto the trail & feeling something shift. My anxiety gave way to stillness. It was just me, & the muted sound of an owl somewhere in the trees.

Over those few mins, my thoughts moved from fear, to calm, to awe. I’ll never forget the feeling of euphoria when I reached the other side; realizing that I could do something that scared me. That has stayed with me!

Today I think a lot about “Type 2 fun” — things that feel uncomfortable but become memories we hold onto most.

Like many LGBTQ people, I still carry childhood anxiety, but being in NPs helps me reconnect with my 10yo self. Today summitting a challenging peak, reminds me how proud that younger version of me would be.

Recently, I explored Big Bend NP with my childhood best friend. Between the mountains, the stars, & riding along the Rio Grande, something clicked. For the 1st time, I felt like Indiana Jones.

Over the years I’ve shared these places with my dad, husband, & friends. Those trips often come during moments of change, & they’re when I feel most like myself.

I think I’m drawn to nature for the same reason I was drawn to music. There’s a harmony in the way wind, water, & landscape interact. Nature reminds me to keep finding joy, even in difficult moments.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it’d be simple: pick one bucket list thing & start planning now.

One day I hope to write a symphony inspired by the parks. But for now, I’m just seeing where the trail leads.

Relationship Status: Married 💝

Wish I had a witty caption, but the night skies at Big Bend were absolutely bonkers. It’s the first time in my life I spent a significant time during the day thinking about how the stars were all still up there, just hiding.

Big Bend is an International Dark Sky Park, which basically means that the park and neighboring communities work together to protect the night sky through responsible lighting policies. A lot of the ambient lighting, including at our Airbnb (read: tent), was red. Very cool what can be accomplished when people work together... you don’t realize what you’re missing until you find out stars can cast shadows.

These were all shot on iPhone, with a 30 second exposure on a $15 tripod I bought last week. Thank you to @mikewiederecht for braving the elements with me as we dealt with rapidly dropping temperatures and whipping winds. On our way back to the Jeep after adequately freezing our arses off, I stopped us for the tenth time to say “Wait! Just one more pic!” and this first slide was the result. I’m assuming the streak is a satellite, although I wish I could have said it was a meteor! taken in Big Bend National Park by @chrisryanmusic
