Otherly Love presents Volume 2 of the bella ciao bella ciao Sessions, this time as a tribute to Thelonious Sphere Monk.  Recorded in the same session as Vol. 01, the track features Joshua White, Chris Speed, Eric Revis, and Dave King performing Monk’s composition “Boo Boo’s Birthday”, taking the song’s structure to exciting new heights.

“I appreciate your openness to this tribute arm of the bella ciao bella ciao series. I will forever be a fanboy, so it’s a treat to honor all these mystical figures. There are more exciting sessions in the pipeline - including some mind-blowing, untethered improv sessions from names we can’t wait to share with you, as well as further tributes to longtime inspirations Robert Wyatt, Don Cherry, Sun Ra, and Bill Frisell. Stay tuned and keep your ears open: ¡music is good!”

“I put this group together while Dave King was visiting Los Angeles. Initially, I booked them to play a gig, and later decided to get them in the studio. Despite moving in the same circles, they had never collectively collaborated before. Dave King & Chris Speed have played together in The Bad Plus and each other’s various outside projects. Eric Revis & Joshua White play frequently in Los Angeles.

I chose to highlight The John Coltrane Quartet, rather than just John Coltrane, because I think of it as one sound, most notably the seminal hook up between John Coltrane and Elvin Jones. I am so grateful to the players for participating in this project. It truly blew away my high expectations. Music is Good and all hail The John Coltrane Quartet!”

John Coltrane was born 100 years ago today! It’s impossible to articulate how much his life and music has enriched my own. As a celebration of Trane’s centennial, my good friends Chris Speed @chrisspeed11, Kaveh Rastegar @kavehrastegar, Aaron Steele @aaronsteele_damn and I got together one morning at Kaveh’s studio and recorded our version of “Miles’ Mode”. Give ours a listen on your favorite DSP, and listen to some Trane today (and everyday). Happy 100th Birthday, Trane! by @chrisspeed11

New pod drop! Chris Speed and Jim Black taped live at Solar Myth.

When Chris Speed formed Yeah No in the late 1990s, there was no lane for its hybrid style, which drew from both post-punk and post-bop, with shoegaze and Balkan klezmer folded in. Speed, a multi-reedist, had intrepid partners in trumpeter Cuong Vu, bassist Skúli Sverrisson, and drummer Jim Black — each one a sonic visionary, and all of them committed to a band ideal.

They’ve since pursued other projects, in far-flung locales. So it felt momentous this spring when Yeah No kicked off a reunion tour at Solar Myth (@solarmythbar), under the auspices of Ars Nova Workshop (@arsnovaworkshop), whose inaugural show they played more than 25 years ago. Before this show, Speed (@chrisspeed11) and Black sat for an onstage interview with Nate Chinen (@natechinen), whose history with the band goes back to that time.

Listen to The Late Set now, wherever you get your podcasts.
