Dropped in October 2017, right after my second Discrete Circuit EP, ASTRAY released its third installment "Wild Hunt EP" by H4L. The live studio project explores tougher, jam-driven experiments resonating from two decades of warehouse reverberation experience.

H4L starts with a stripped-down pursuit on the title track, creating an organic groove that captivates with its impelling kick drums and distorted sound particles. On the flip, UK legend and label friend Mark Broom recalibrates "Wild Hunt" by throwing the initial core parts overboard to empower his highly effective hi-hats as the driving force rocketing into a distant atmosphere.

While "Sahara Pump Theory" showcases H4L's peak-time-leaning approach with vivid stab sequences and gnarly acidic bass, "Hell For Leather" closes the EP with an unexpected hit-and-run sonic attack full of leftfield yet industrial jazz arrangement, broken/off beats, and IDM drum patterns.

In the ongoing narrative of our oral history, told by each artist featured on AWAY 10 YEARS, our track-by-track exploration takes an introspective turn. We delve into the roots of AWAY Soundsystem, initially formed by AWAY founder Discrete Circuit and Australian DJ and producer Christian Vance. However, their connection goes far beyond memorable DJ sets; it’s fair to say that label AWAY Music wouldn’t exist as a label if it weren’t for the two.

B2. AWAY Soundsystem – „Shifting Scenes“

„Berlin is a distilled microcosm of the global dance floor. Legendary. An amplified expression of change seen and heard through music. 10 years. Shifting scenes. Memories. Neural connections that remain so vivid and kaleidoscopic. ‚Shifting Scenes ‚is a contribution to that continuum. Just one impression of the hundreds of artists and thousands of dancers that have been part of the story over the last decade. Happy 10 years!“

AWAY Soundsystem is a collaboration between Christian Vance, aka H4L, and AWAY’s co-founder Discrete Circuit. Known for their individual as well as DJ sets together, the AWAY Soundsystem is about having fun with rugged machine grooves and serious soul. No more, but no less.
