I was still involved in doing radio shows when Hedwig and the Angry Inch was screened in September 2001, during the 7th AIFF Opening Nights, at Danaos cinema. It was like an electroshock, but then, almost every screening felt like that during these first years of the festival (I’ve been following it since its first year, 1995) — screenings held at Attikon and Apollon (how much I miss them!), and of course, movies with music and cinema combined, selected from the very first moment in its programme, setting the annual date for all music and cinema lovers of Athens (and not only Athens) to meet every September. After so many years, and with so much changed (for better or worse) in my city, it’s with enormous pleasure that I discover that this festival, full of memories, inside jokes, articles, interviews, parties and so on, still has the knack: Yesterday’s Köln 75, in Astor cinema, is a very good example. Köln 75, with Sol Bondy as a producer (he co-produced the Oscar-nominated Secret Agent), follows the true story of Vera Brandes, who, in 1975, at the age of 18, organised Keith Jarrett’s historic concert in Cologne — a concert that was later considered the most successful jazz concert and recording of all time. The film premiered at the Berlinale, and the event recently made headlines again with the anniversary tribute organised by the Barbican and Serious in England in April. Vera, excellently played by Mala Emde as her younger self and later by Susanne Wolff (the protagonist of the limited TV series Unfamiliar), was present last night for a Q&A in a full house. Mind you, she was only 18 when she organised all that, and she had to put in a lot of courage, effort, nerve and… running (as a friend sitting next to me said, “this is the remake of Run, Lola, Run!”) to achieve it. That’s a film really hard to miss when it comes to cinemas. And, ok, the whole festival #köln75 #berlinale @athensfilmfestival #music #cinema #jazz by @christina.bitha
Η Βενετία είναι το το “Don' t Look Now” της Daphne du Maurier και του Nicolas Roeg και το “Death in Venice” του Thomas Man και του Luchino Visconti, ειναι η πλατεία του Αγίου Μάρκου, τα palazzos της, το μουσεiο Peggy Guggenheim (ποτέ δεν έχω ζηλέψει γυναίκα τόσο πολύ στη ζωή μου όσο την Πέγκι), είναι οι γειτονιές της, το Castello και το Cannaregio κι ένα σωρό άλλες που δεν έχω ακόμα προφτάσει να γνωρίσω, το Spritz (Campari ή Select), το άφταστο gelato, το Lido απέναντι, τα vaporetti και τα water taxis, αυτό το εκτυφλωτικό πρωινό της φως που κάνει τα πάντα να αστράφτουν (μαζί και την ψυχή σου). #venice @biennale_cinema @stregisvenice by @christina.bitha

#bobbydeerfield #cinema #sydneypollack #f1 by @christina.bitha

After a gloriously chaotic week at Cannes Film Festival—reuniting with amazing friends and acquaintances, and dancing through three unforgettable parties hosted by @iffglasgow - one of my favourite film festivals in the world! - surrounded by incredible sponsors and partners like @discothequefragrances (their tiny butter-box-sized aroma gadget that fits in my pocket has officially become my latest obsession), and fueled, of course, by an entirely unreasonable amount of pasta and pizza.. …I headed north to Italy, where another precious friend had organised a majestic surprise birthday celebration (sadly, not for me 🤣). Naturally, this involved consuming approximately two tons of polenta (in two days). Now back home, and the only sensible thing to do is a strict one-week detox. Until the next festival. It was my first, it was their last: Sundance Film Festival, the biggest independent film festival in the world, founded decades ago by the late Robert Redford, is moving next year from Park City, Utah, to Boulder, Colorado. Sundance grew, so it was time to move on. There they were celebrated stars like Ethan Hawke (whose film "The Weight" was maybe the best movie I’ve seen in the festival) confessing their eternal fidelity to Redford, who launched their careers back in the 80s (while skiing with them nearby). In the same spirit, there were some touching anniversary screenings of Sundance instant classics like "Little Miss Sunshine", launched 20 (!) years ago, with the whole cast having a Q&A (Toni Colette flew there from Australia for that). Personally, what I hold from Sundance is the feeling of being there, for the last edition in Park City. The Audience Award for World Cinema Dramatic to "Hold Onto Me" ("Κράτα Με"). "Best Summer", a documentary about a summer full of music by Foo Fighters, Pavement, Sonic Youth and Beastie Boys. Ethan Hawke, now and forever. Alexander Skarsgård, maybe the tallest man I have ever seen, walking on Main Street. A video with Robert Redford speaking about his Sundance vision before every screening. Bloody Mary with bourbon instead of vodka. Mountain time. Martin Petrov, best co-producer and friend at festivals and beyond. The JCrew Gala where some of the American skiing athletes spoke about what to expect from the upcoming Winter Olympics at Cortina, Italy (Utah will be the host in 2034). And I put aside the fact that, being in the US for the last two weeks, I experienced from close range the Greenland Threat, the biggest snowstorm in the US that devastated half of the States (Utah was just in the corner), Minneapolis, Iran, a near new federal shutdown (a.k.a no flights), Catherine's O Hara sudden death and a new song from Bruce Springsteen. @sundanceorg #utah #colorado @robertredfordofficialpage #winterolympics2034 @jcrew @dialmformartin #ethanhawke @holdontome_film #parkcity by @christina.bitha
For the third year, Variety’s Global Conversations @festivaldecannes featured panels on global filming incentives. On May 16, panelists from Cinecittà, Les Studios de Paris, Film AlUla, and Bulgaria—including Martin I. Petrov, director at International Film Festival Glasgow and my co-producer at Lately Productions—discussed incentives, moderated by Variety at Lucia Beach. Bulgaria and France just nailed it —well-prepared, passionate, and clear about their tax rebates. Italy, however, missed the mark, with its representative arriving late, reading from notes, and struggling with English. Looking forward to next year’s panels @variety by @christina.bitha
