I miss the wonderful striped makeup case with two compartments that I bought shortly before it closed. And their shower caps. Toward the end, they sold only Bendel branded merchandise, and it lost its edgy charm. But I used to love tagging along with my mother before Christmas in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Their basement became a wonderful mishmash of elegance and kitsch: a cassette of a shrink yawning and muttering “Yes, yes” and “Go on” for 45 minutes, alongside sachets covered in silk, next to inappropriately shaped soaps and ornaments, alonside stacks of Lee Bailey’s latest cookbook. Before there was Ina Garten and Martha Stewart there was Lee Bailey. #oldschoolnewyork #bendel #henribendel #leebailey by @christinaruggieri
