Rooted Sky by Andrés Guzman and Christina Vang, 2026. This mural is a meditation on belonging and becoming. Set within a window, both a threshold and an opening, the mural honors all walks of life as part of a shared, living landscape.

Created in collaboration by local Minneapolis artists Andrés Guzman and Christina Vang, the work reflects a collective vision shaped by place, community, and care.

The mural was informed by a visioning session facilitated by curator Tricia Heuring, held with shelter residents to gather their feedback, lived experiences, and hopes for the artwork. These shared reflections helped guide the imagery and tone of the piece, rooting it in voices often navigating transition, resilience, and renewal.

Native species and plants appear throughout the mural, honoring the local landscape and the ecosystems that hold and sustain the community.

Forms reach upward and outward while remaining grounded, reflecting the balance between where we come from and where we are going.

Rooted Sky offers grace for the journey—for uneven paths, moments of pause, and the quiet strength it takes to keep moving forward.

Light and color act as signals of care and possibility, suggesting that hope is not distant or abstract, but something carried daily and shaped through connection.

Looking toward the future without forgetting the present, Rooted Sky visualizes a horizon where many stories coexist and invites viewers to see themselves reflected in that shared sky.

A little over a month ago, the SEAD Project launched Mekong Journeys. Imo, a project that deserves way more buzz. It was a privilege to help bring these stories of memory, resilience, and belonging to life through illustration. It took a village—Southeast Asian photographers, illustrators, designers, storytellers, translators, producers, and videographers in collaboration over 2 years to cement these stories for generations to come.

Head to theseadproject.org/mekongjourneys to watch the videos and read the stories. 💛 by @christinavang

Can you smell this??? Been ruminating on an asian medicine series for a looooong time. The smells, the packaging, the ingredients, the ailments, the uses, and the advice from mom that I took for granted. I’m working through the fog of memories to remedy this. Tiger balm, monkey balm, on the way. by @christinavang
