HERITAGE & MODERNITY - Chris Dyson Architects New book Photographs Peter Landers, David Churchill Design Tom Green Publisher Lund Humphries The launch party - September More details to follow 'Chris Dyson dovetails ancient and modern with a sleight of hand that makes the viewer unable to imagine one without the other. This is architecture where space can be stretched and formed, where there is counterpoint and pace, silence and noise and where the user is always considered.' – Jock McFadyen RA 'This is a most elegant book, chronicling Dyson’s timeless architecture that consistently sits so comfortably with its neighbours and reflects the eclectic tapestry of everyday life as well as the magpie mind of Jim Stirling, Chris’s mentor and first employer.' – Peter Murray OBE Hon FRIBA ‘Chris Dyson trained as a modernist at Oxford Brookes University and the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, then worked first for James Stirling and Michael Wilford and from 2000 to 2003 for Terry Farrell. But having lived and worked in Spitalfields since 1990, originally with an office in his house in Princelet Street, he has an equally good feel for the texture and materiality of historic buildings. This book explores, explains and illustrates the range of his work as an architect over the last twenty years.’ Charles Saumarez Smith Professor of Architectural History, Royal Academy of Arts “To me, Chris Dyson is the pencil and the brick… his buildings are human.” Humphrey Ocean RA by @christo_dyson
Thank you to the architecture club TAC @thearchclub1922 for organising such an in depth tour of the fascinating studio of @lee_snow12 @officialheatherwickstudio @thomasheatherwick last night ,,,nothing can be described as boring here, a monopoly of interest and intrigue ,,,thanks to all involved seems a somewhat insubstantial comment ! The 'Spitalfields' rug is informed by a fragment of original Huguenot crewel work, which provided the starting point for a much larger composition, designed by Chris Dyson of @chrisdysonarchitects alongside the Christopher Farr in-house design team. Its flowers and fruit motifs were enlarged, expanded and reimagined across the rug, retaining the character and vibrant colours of the original while moving away from the density of historic pattern. Silk motifs are worked at a higher pile, lending them emphasis against a wool ground, with a simple lower-pile border, enlivened by stems and vines that creep across it. . Hand-knotted in handspun Afghan wool with silk motifs and made in partnership with @turquoisemountain. . Over in London, Christopher Farr have partnered with award-winning Chris Dyson of @chrisdysonarchitects to produce a modern reinterpretation of a historic Huguenot textile design. The practice is located a few streets away from the Christopher Farr Studio in Spitalfields, the epicentre of the weaving and textile industry in the eighteenth century. . The Spitalfields rug with a high silk content, comprises oversized elements referencing the flowers and fruit motifs of the original Spitalfields silks, here translated into a hand-knotted rug in handspun wool and silk. . A great talk tonight by @langlandsandbell here caught enjoying the connection with Charles Holden past master @artworkersguild who was commissioned by Mr Peck back in the day building over 50 wonderful underground stations that today serve Londoners so elegantly ! A wonderful lecture tonight about their work “Artists, Ben Langlands & Nikki Bell explore the complex web of relationships linking people and architecture and the coded systems of communications and exchange we use to negotiate a fast changing technological world. Langlands & Bell began their collaboration in 1978 while still at art school in London. They are based in London and Kent, UK and have exhibited widely internationally since the early 1980s. Their art examines human relations from the personal to the political by exploring the structures we inhabit and the networks of communication and exchange that surround us. Their art works range from film, video and interactive digital media, to sculpture, installation, and full-scale architecture.” #art #architecture #models #london #geometry by @christo_dyson

The single line,,,The drawn line still matters. Long before a building becomes a model or a rendering, it begins with a pencil. Every line is a decision—testing proportion, rhythm, scale and character. In these sketches, the architecture is explored through line alone, revealing not just the building’s massing, but its relationship to the surrounding streetscape and its architectural language. Hand drawing slows the process in the best possible way. It demands observation, precision and understanding. Every stroke asks a question: Does this belong? Is the proportion right? Does the building contribute to its place? For us, drawing is never simply representation. It is a way of designing—where ideas are tested, refined and ultimately brought to life. Architecture begins with listening. It is realised through drawing. Lyn Chadwick an inspiring visit one day to Houghton Hall in Norfolk Bold work ,,,in a fantastic setting As you walk around these I find it Interesting to observe the form in the stainless steel change and in some cases become alive and dynamic I highly recommend a visit also inside the house where everything is framed by the early English Palladian architecture 1722-1735 and first sketched by James Gibbs and Colen Campbell, largely followed through lavish interiors by William Kent If you have time and I would not rush it,,,you can also enjoy the walled garden - you should allow a complete day though! Enjoy “Chadwick came to sculpture through unconventional means, initially training and working as an architectural draughtsman before turning to mobile constructions for trade fairs. The success of these early mobiles and free-standing sculptures, two of which were shown at the Festival of Britain in London in 1951, encouraged him to pursue sculpture full time. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Chadwick’s practice was rooted in construction rather than modelling. Working primarily in bronze, he moved from kinetic mobiles in the late 1940s to the iconic angular figures — often paired and drawn from human and animal forms — from the 1950s onwards. He began by welding an iron armature, or ‘space frame’, which he then filled with Stolit, a man-made stone composed of gypsum and iron filings, building up the surface into a solid form. Starting from abstraction and gradually giving his figures a strong sense of life and movement, Chadwick’s process reversed traditional sculptural methods. The result is a body of work marked by tension, attitude, and rich surface textures.” by @christo_dyson
