Pendulum

I lay in bed
to take the weight off my back.

I don’t remember
when it started to feel heavy.

Sometimes I just want someone
to cut me up,

to remove the boulders,
the weights,
the sand
from my back.

But I march on.
I persevere.

I see others
having the same problem—

the look of death
in their faces

while someone just piles
more boulders,
more weight,
more sand,
more bricks,

more—

well, you get the point.

It’s always the ones
that act clueless
about the murder
they are committing,

and yet
we are fools
for letting it happen.

But I don’t mind.

Sometimes
it’s just how it goes.

Eventually
they will experience
the slow death

and the weight
on their backs,

while I
and the rest
would do the killings.
