Fifty years ago, Anne Rice wrote a novel that changed what a vampire story could be. This fall, five authors who carry her legacy forward sit down to discuss Interview with the Vampire.

Christopher here. In the early 1980s, three young men walked into one of my mother’s book signings in 18th-century waistcoats, their ponytails tied off with ribbon. Her first novel had been critically dismissed. Most of the unsold copies had been pulped. But those men had come dressed as Louis and Lestat, and when they walked in, my mother blushed, and her laughter took on a white-hot, unguarded, and joyful quality I can still hear today. The men were the first soldiers of a growing fandom inspired by her once dismissed debut novel.

Eric and I are grateful beyond words. For fifty years, you have kept this book alive.

After gathering with so many of you in New Orleans last year for Anne’s celebration of life, I returned home to write this piece, knowing how painful parts of it would be. The loving response to that special night, and the love so many of you have shown me and the family since Anne’s passing, buoyed me and gave me the strength to put these words to page. The result is my afterword to the 50th anniversary edition of Interview with the Vampire, which The New York Times adapted into essay form and published today.

Ride out New Orleans Halloween Week with best-selling authors Christopher Rice and Eric Shaw Quinn!

This year’s Krewe of BOO! Grand Marshals are serving on the Royal Court in celebration of Anne Rice and the 50th Anniversary of her literary phenomenon Interview with the Vampire.

The day after New Orleans’ Official Halloween Parade, they will introduce the film adaptation of the genre-bending novel, then answer selected questions from the audience, before the 4K screening at Prytania Theatre Uptown.

On Halloween proper, they will join fellow best-selling author Leigh Bardugo at Loyola University New Orleans for the final stop on the book tour marking the release of IWTV’s 50th Anniversary Edition.

Albany to Kennebunkport is five hours. JR Ward didn’t see a mile of it.
