The Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest) is a building situated atop the Kehlstein, a rocky promontory above Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden, in southeastern Germany. Completed in 1938, it was commissioned by the Nazi Party for official and social functions and was visited by Adolf Hitler on at least 14 documented occasions.

After arriving by a shuttle bus, you will walk this long tunnel to reach the elevator.

This is where guests would gather as they wait for the elevator or the cars for those that didn’t have to walk the tunnel.

Being in this small space knowing that less than 90 years ago was occupied by some of the most evil humans in history was quite unnerving.

The infamous fireplace damaged over the years from people chipping off souvenirs to take home. Be careful about the history you read as according our tour guide, much of the claims made about this place are fabrications.

This view was in an episode of Band of Brothers. However the actual view was changed for the show.

This cross did little to make me feel any better about this place. I have zero regrets coming here so do not read me wrong. History is important, even the bad history. The Sound of Music — we took a Sound of Music Tour out of Salzburg where some of the filming took place. Photo one is church where a wedding took place. 2 is the home of the von Trapp family. 3 is the Gazebo from the film. 4 is a tribute to one of the actresses Charmian Carr. Much of the tour was spent in the car which makes it difficult to capture many photos so this was pretty much it.

Until after this trip, I had never watched the movie as musicals are generally not my thing. But when heard it had Nazis, I had to watch it. Nothing better than beating Nazis. 😁

Salzburg — a couple photos with the Festung Hohensalzburg, in the distance, taken with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. We were coming back from a delicious dinner at the Augustiner Braugasthof Krimpelstätter. Sorry, not much else to say. Maybe I should ai to write something magical sounding. 🤣

September 10, 2025 brought us to Salzburg — the fourth largest city in Austria. In 2020 its population was 156,852. The city lies on the Salzach River, near the border with Germany and at the foot of the Alps mountains.src:Wikipedia

Schloss Schönbrunn — the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, located in Hietzing, the 13th district of Vienna. The name Schönbrunn (meaning “beautiful spring”) has its roots in an artesian well from which water was consumed by the court.

Melk Abby — the end of our Dunabe River cruise left us at the Melk Abby where we had lunch a a tour. Melk Abbey is a Benedictine abbey above the town of Melk, Lower Austria, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley, that belongs to the Austrian Congregation.

Kloster Schönbühel — The former Schönbühel monastery is located on a rock 500 m downstream of Schönbühel Castle (in Schönbühel on the Danube) on the right bank of the Danube and was built from the 1760s. In 1980 the service monks left the monastery; it is now cared for as a parish church.
