Flemish School, second half of the 18th century
Putti in an Artist’s Studio: An Allegory of the Fine Arts

A group of putti are shown in an artist’s studio enacting an allegory of the fine arts with painting, drawing and sculpture represented in the playful academy.

The picture belongs to the Flemish tradition of monochrome illusionistic painting associated with artists such as Marten Jozef Geeraerts, whose grisaille and brunaille compositions were intended to evoke carved relief. Close comparisons may also be drawn with the work of Piat-Joseph Sauvage (1744–1818), the Tournai-born Flemish painter celebrated for trompe-l’œil grisailles of putti and allegorical subjects painted to simulate sculpture.

Most interestingly, the reverse bears an old label reading “Frances A. Elkins, Monterey, California,” referring to the celebrated American decorator Frances Adler Elkins (1888–1953), together with a further inventory label numbered 909 and dated June 30, 1953. Elkins, sister of architect David Adler, was among the most influential American decorators of the twentieth century and furnished her Monterey home, Casa Amesti, with a highly personal mixture of European furniture, paintings and works of art.

Whether the painting formed part of the furnishings of Casa Amesti itself or was held as stock through Elkins’s decorating business remains to be established.

A later Ollendorff Fine Arts, New York–San Francisco shipping label remains on the reverse.

A pair of Italian ebonized armchairs, inlaid throughout with bone and mother-of-pearl in the Moorish taste. North Italian, circa 1880.

The sgabello form of the Renaissance hall chair, dressed in Moorish arabesque. The pink velvet is not original and has been left as found (for now).
You can see the influence this style would have had on Carlo Bugatti growing up around Milan.
