A tremendous honor and delight today to finally meet Alia Azariah, director of collective impact for Safe House Project in Ventura, CA. She is an indomitable force of nature who is changing the national landscape of human trafficking awareness and prevention and the care and recovery of survivors. She's also one of the most fun-loving, dynamic, personable people i know. We've been talking extensively via phone for several yeas, so being able to chat face-to-face and give her a big hug to thank her for everything was great. She also gave an amazing, insightful and inspiring presentation for the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking's "State of Human Trafficking" luncheon aT Windows on The River. by @christopherjohnston32

I was introduced to Alia Azariah several years ago and spent a lot of time with the native Californian on the phone interviewing her about her life and her work. So, I'm looking forward to meeting her in person today when she speaks at the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking "State of Human Trafficking" luncheon at Windows on the River. Alia, director of collective impact for Safe House Project, is a high-energy, deeply compassionate force of nature who is inspiring significant improvements in law enforcement, social wellness programs and everyday citizens understanding of and response to human trafficking.

Beautiful portrait of Don Drumm, now 91, and his late wife Lisa, from the 1970s at the Penland School of Craft in Bakersville, NC.

Really an honor to write about this astonishingly prolific and innovative master sculptor, Don Drumm. His fame extends from Akron, where he spent most of creative life, around the world. Even though he's 91, most days you'll still find him creating in his workshop across the street from Don Drumm Studios and Galleries. The breadth of his imagination and artistic abilities is truly amazing. Looking forward to his 55-year retrospective in September and October.

Who needs Hollywood? We've got TRG, an extraordinary, state-of-the-art 160,000-sq-ft facility, featuring a virtual production wall for film, television and commercial productions. I've thoroughly enjoyed talking with CEO Adam Wilde, who has assembled a phenomenal crew of professional creators and production experts. Loved having a chance to talk with brilliant Cleveland filmmaker Tyler Davidson, too, about his new film BUDDY that he produced/co-financed that opens in 1,000 theaters nationwide tomorrow (8/28). Can't wait to check out his horror comedy about a psychotic children's TV show starring a bright orange, fuzzy and terrifying unicorn mascot, kind of a deranged Barney, voiced by Keegan Michael-Key. Oh yeah. See you at the theater this weekend!

For most of her life, Justine Siegal has been vaporizing barriers for women who want to play baseball, so it's not a surprise that she is the co-founder and first commissioner of the Women's Professional Baseball League. It's the first such league for women in the U.S. in more than 70 years. I've watched her working diligently, tirelessly in preparation for some time now at our mutual favorite coffee haunt, so it was a blast to be able to write about her phenomenal exploits in helping girls and women play a game that they love just as much and play just as passionately as men. Anyone who has watched a WPBL game in its first season will attest to that. So check it out. The four teams for the inaugural season are playing through September.

Finally got to see a gallery full of Violet Maimbourg's fabulous artworks at the opening of her show "Your Love is My Favorite Carnival" last night. Her artistry is world-class and her fabrication skills are unmatched. You've got until September 19 to get over to Waterloo Arts gallery in the Waterloo Arts District to be completely engaged, enthralled and energized by Violet's art.

I was fortunate to profile her for CAN Journal's Summer issue, so I had seen a couple pieces in her KSU workshop as she was completing her MFA in the spring, but it was a wonderful experience to view so many of her colorful, whimsical but completely compelling pieces layered with depth all in Waterloo Arts' main gallery. I know how much work she put into creating each and then hanging them meticulously for her show! Congratulations, Violet!

Keep your eyes on this artist. Violet's just getting started, and one of her greatest gifts is her infinite imagination.

As a super double extra special treat we got to hang out with Violet's old friend, THE Amy Schwabauer, and one of our oldest and closets friends, THE Deborah Koncan!

Violet’s Artist Statement: “Your Love Is My Favorite Carnival serves as an episodic, illustrative journey, navigating interpersonal relationships with myself and others. These sculptural objects serve as physical embodiments of my emotional experiences – they exist as sculpture and self-portraiture. Using the visual language of carnival games, funhouse attractions, and retro amusement-park theatrics, the work examines how humor, spectacle and fun can mask the nightmare of intense emotional dysregulation that comes with having Borderline Personality Disorder.” by @christopherjohnston32

I'm really late on posting this as Alan R. Cohen, MD returned to Cleveland to do a reading and presentation of his book COMFORT ALWAYS: HEALING IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY at Beachwood Library in early May. However, I post this because, as an independent journalist for several decades, I have met and written about many fascinating and cool people at all levels doing great things to make the world a better place. I rank Dr. Cohen in my top two or three, and the profile that I wrote of him, "Disarming the Bomb in Hunter's Head," for Northern Ohio Live more than 30 years ago remains one of the best I've ever written and one of my all-time favorites.
Now director of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, he is probably the number one pediatric neurosurgeon in the world. As we say about the Cleveland Orchestra, if he's not number one, there's no one better. In addition to his brilliant surgical skills, he is one of the funniest and most deeply compassionate doctors/men I have ever met. His exploits while at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s hospital for 20 years are legendary, and not just because of all of the children's lives he saved, his innovative procedures and all of the doctors he trained, but because of his uncanny ability to make the children and families comfortable at one of the most difficult times of their lives, when the child was facing neurosurgery to ablate a tumor or treat another severe neurological disorder.
The kids called him The King because they knew he included Elvis Presley on his play list in OR 6. For many years, Dr. Cohen enlisted other doctors, nurses and his young patients to perform at RB&C on Elvis' birthday, January 8th. He would dress up like The King in flowing velvet, high-collared outfits Presley made famous that were handmade by another brilliant, world-class pediatric neurosurgeon, his partner and wife, Dr. Shenandoah Robinson, aka, The Dodester.

It was great for Patrice and I to see him again in person, and I cannot recommend his book any more highly.

He keeps photos of their graduations, weddings and children of their own, all life experiences they were able to enjoy. Long live The King. by @christopherjohnston32

I love this photo because it includes three of my all-time favorite rock stars: Alison Garrigan, Dennis Van Crash and Thomas Mulready. I had a lot of fun talking with all three of them about their upcoming David Bowie show at the Music Box Thursday night, and all of the great music they'll be playing as part of their ongoing NEO Rewind series. Bowie was a perfect choice because Cleveland is where he launched his first American tour in 1972 at Music Hall, primarily because WMMS had created a fast-growing audience for his music here through their support before other radio stations in the U.S. got how great Bowie was even early in his career. Rock on, Vanity Crash and Cleveland!
