I was able to sneak in a couple original tunes last night at @katamakitchen…come on down to West Tisbury Library today at 2:30 for a full set of my songs followed by a set by MIXT - my friends Lisa & Barry

Happy to report I survived 41 gigs in August including THIRTEEN of ‘em last week alone (both personal records!) and I’ve got another cool week of shows ahead. I’m particularly excited to be playing a solo set of original music this Saturday, 9/5 at the West Tisbury Public Library at 2:30. It’s free and open to all and I’d sure love to see some familiar faces in the audience as I try out some new material. And if you’d prefer I do happier songs written by other people, here’s where else you can catch me this week…

This photo was taken moments before Herbie Hancock took the stage for his headlining set at the Newport Jazz Festival. The man is 86 years old and to say he’s still “got it” is a profound understatement. It also made me curious what year Herbie first appeared at the festival. He was definitely there with Miles’ 2nd quintet in the mid-60s but he then led his own band there in 1969 on a bill that also included Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Sly Stone, B.B. King and Frank Zappa! What I wouldn’t give to have shot THAT year…

But as for now, I’m back on Martha’s Vineyard feeling inspired and motivated by all the amazing music I just witnessed. And it’s a good thing I’m so inspired because I’ve got TWELVE gigs this week - some private stuff, lots of Agreeable Men stuff (including our first Friday at The Ritz in quite a while). Plus I’ve got cool stuff with my guys Sean McMahon and Andrew Sue Wing. It’s right back to the grind but what a grind it is! taken in Fort Adams-Newport Jazz by @christopherknottmusic

Had myself quite a weekend filming Newport Folk 2026. Of course the music was awesome as always. But more than anything, I’m happy I got to spend so much quality time with my better half Allison, my brother/director Joe, and one of the coolest crews ever assembled by my dearest friend/fearless leader Colleen.

On a professional level I was fortunate to shoot sets by some of the baddest artists around - Lauryn Hill, Brandi Carlile, Vulfpeck, Brandon Flowers, and Hayley Williams just to name a few. And as always I was inspired by some artists that were newer to me - Leif Vollebekk, Medium Build, Searows, This Is Lorelei, Ryan Davis and Kirby. Oh and there was also a set of sick REM covers by world-class actor Michael Shannon and a killer band. After all that, the weekend wrapped with perhaps the best afterparty in my 16 years working the festival.

So fun to switch things up and bang some drums last night at The Ritz. “12-year-old Me” would be proud (although he’d be slightly less proud of that O.J. jersey…)

Today you can call us the “Original Men.” That’s right, for the first time on the island we’ll be performing music WE wrote this Wednesday at 5:00 as part of Mike Benjamin’s “Sound of the Vineyard” series and we couldn’t be more excited.

To add to that excitement, we’ll be joined by special guests @allisonrosesings and Steve Johnson (@barbedwirebass) to help us fully realize the songs.
