A week before my high school graduation, I made a really dumb decision that forever altered the course of my life. It came with repercussions; none of which were worse than the fact that my mother did not get to watch me walk the stage and graduate. It has bothered me every day of my life since and last night felt like I was finally putting that chapter of my life to bed. If it takes a village to raise a child, it took the whole damn city to get Chris through community college. When I graduate state, that one will be for me. I can’t believe I am writing these words but I lost my sister today. I do not know why this life has to be so cruel sometimes but I suspect there isn’t truly an answer. Ashley Patterson’s influence on my life is incalculable. I have never had someone give me more advice on the opposite sex. There has never been someone more willing to offer a shot from their bottle as soon as you walk through the door. The absolute most welcoming presence in not just my life but my closest around me. The family lost our matriarch today and I’m sobbing as I write this because I know while we’ll get through this, we truly will never be the same. I cannot even fathom what my brother EJ is going through right now. I will miss you so much Ashley. Some turn to god in moments like these and while I’m not a believer, I still found myself praying today. There will not be a day that goes by for the rest of my life where I won’t think of you.
