As America celebrates 250 years, I’m reminded that our nation’s story is told through ordinary families who made extraordinary sacrifices so the next generation could dream a little bigger than the one before.

These photographs and documents are part of my story.
They’ve been passed down for more than 150 years, beginning with the first members of my family who arrived on these shores in 1877—before Ellis Island opened and before Lady Liberty welcomed millions seeking a new beginning. They were entrepreneurs, artists, doctors, carpenters, jewelers, farmers, and so much more. Some left behind successful lives and everything they had built. Others arrived with little more than hope and nowhere to look but up. Every one of them was courageous. Every one of them was audacious. Every one of them believed that a better life was possible—that the American Dream was worth chasing.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate not only to have the stories passed down through generations, but to have the photographs, letters, passports, documents, and keepsakes that bring those stories to life. They transformed family lore into living history.

When I look through these images, I don’t just see my ancestors. I see people who believed in possibility. I see how important America was to their dreams, and I feel incredibly grateful that, generations later, I get to pursue my own. I make my living with a camera in my hands because they first had the courage to chase theirs.

My hope is that 150 years from now, someone in my family—or perhaps someone in one of the families I’ve had the privilege to photograph—will open a box of photographs, and discover their story, and feel the same connection to their past that I feel today.

Because the greatest inheritance we can leave isn’t wealth - it’s our legacy. In my family’s case, it’s an American story.

So take those photographs. Talk about the memories. Someone, someday, may just thank you for it.

Having now been to Berlin twice — the first time for the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2014 and the second for @galleryweekendberlin 2026 — I feel as though I’m only just beginning to understand the magic of the city. On the surface, Berlin can be difficult to read, but I’ve found that the deeper you look and the more you slip into its rhythm, the more everything begins to click into place.

Take Camaro Haus, for example. Located in the Tiergarten neighborhood, it perfectly blends history and art. The gallery sits atop a prewar factory that was used as a munitions storehouse during World War II. Today, it has been transformed into a quiet art sanctuary in the most perfect way. The seemingly endless beautiful steps to the top floor almost feel like the price of admission — and the climb is entirely worth it.

Heinz Trökes – AUGENREISEN (Eye Journeys at the Camaro House)

As an artist, networker, and co-founder of the legendary Gerd Rosen Gallery, Heinz Trökes (1913-1997) created a space in Berlin in 1945 where the avant-garde re-emerged and a new intellectual awakening began. His voice was as indispensable in the postwar debates as his paintings, which reflected the hunger for freedom and cosmopolitanism.

Exploring the world was central to his life and work. For Trökes, travel was not merely a change of location, but a driving force for renewal. Impressions, landscapes, encounters – all of this transformed in his work into vividly colored, poetic visual worlds that form the centerpiece of the exhibition.

The fact that the Alexander and Renata Camaro Foundation is dedicated to Trökes is also related to an early encounter that connects the two artists. In 1946, Trökes met Alexander Camaro (1901–1992) near Quedlinburg, recognized the similarity in their artistic approaches, and helped him secure his first solo exhibition at the Gerd Rosen Gallery that same year. This led to a lifelong friendship.

The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Trökes as a traveler, source of inspiration and visionary artist – and to see the world through his eyes: open, curious, full of movement.

When I started my plan of my attack for this event and what I wanted to achieve here I knew tha shooting a sunset event on the beach was a beautiful race against the setting sun. The prettier the sunset gets, the darker it becomes at harder to shoot. I needed a solution.

I thought “what if I could just set up my studio lighting and not have to worry about light?” Well, I packed up my gear and said let’s give it a try!

Twas such a magical evening, it was August but the zero humidity and 72 degrees with not a cloud in the sky - the stars were aligning.

Around 8:30, the sun set and it was getting very difficult to shoot so it was now or never. I got my c-stand out, plugged in my pack and opened my umbrella. Everybody was like woah what’s that! Wishing a few minutes the lights were on and set for the most beautiful bride to be to step in. @bellemcdonnell had the looks and I had the light. It was a show-stopper!

Behold ~ my 7ft silver umbrella on my trusty, Norman strobes from around the 90s.
