The tattoo on my chest says “Love All” and “Forgive All.”

I got it because I forgave the man who murdered my mom. He was her ex-husband, and he was my stepfather for part of my childhood. It was a murder-suicide, so he’s gone too. But that didn’t make forgiving him any easier.

I know how that sounds. For a long time I didn’t think forgiveness was even possible, and honestly I didn’t think he deserved it. But here’s what I learned. Forgiveness was never really about him. It was about me.

Holding resentment is a weight that only YOU carry. The person you’re holding it against isn’t affected by it at all. You’re the one dragging it around every single day, and it slowly poisons the way you move through life.

The moment I released it, I was finally able to heal. To move on. To grow into the person I am today. Letting go of that weight is the greatest feeling in the world, and I wouldn’t be who I am without it.

And when I think about forgiveness, I think about God. He forgave all of our sins. He is the ultimate example of forgiveness, and if He can forgive us for everything we’ve done, then I can find it in my heart to forgive too.

So here’s my challenge to you. That person who just popped into your head, the one you’re certain you could NEVER forgive. Forgive them. Not for them. For you.

Two words changed my entire life, and it took losing my mom at 17 to understand them.

After she died, I realized I don’t have to wake up in the morning. I get to. Some people didn’t get that this morning.

I don’t have to go on a run, I get to, because God gave me working legs. I don’t have to go to work, I get to, because I have a job.

Everything you’re dreading right now is something someone else is praying for.

Every “have to” is a “get to” in disguise, you’re just not looking at it right. So change the word, and watch your whole life change. It changed mine. by @christophervictors
