Enter the world of dreams. Jean Schlumberger’s magnificent 1965 Phoenix clip is paired with its exquisitely worked original drawing, offering a glimpse into the journey from imagination to jewel.

Here, we can especially appreciate the jeweler’s art in interpreting Schlumberger’s vision. The spirit, arrangement of colored gemstones, and energy are all present on paper, yet the finished jewel takes on a life of its own.

A special moment for Joan Agajanian Quinn, seeing her Schlumberger masterworks reunited with their drawings and once again on display at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for the first time since 1995.

Cultural stewardship in action: Tiffany & Co. | The Tiffany Archives is proud to partner with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris on a multiyear conservation initiative to preserve and digitize thousands of Jean Schlumberger’s extraordinary original drawings- some of which were never realized jewelry designs.

Through the painstaking removal of aging adhesives, tape, and acidic matting, this work helps safeguard these precious works on paper, ensuring that Schlumberger’s creative brilliance may endure (and inspire) for generations to come.

Treasures reborn. A wealth of drawings and design variations by the great Jean Schlumberger was entrusted to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris by his life partner, Luc Bouchage, in 1994, following Jean‘s wish.

These works offer an intimate glimpse into the mind of a creative genius whose imagination continues to inspire today. I’m especially drawn to the twisting, Baroque wings that frame the central jewel in this design drawing.

For generations, New Yorkers have escaped to Coney Island in search of novelty, spectacle, and a little relief from the everyday demands of the city.

These 2017 windows were a candy-coated dream: seemingly an infinity of ruby-red candy apples display timeless Tiffany rings. Simple but memorable, the windows captured the spirit of summer amusement — and feel especially fitting today for the Fourth of July.

A feast for the eyes, window displays should always entice — but also offer a little surprise, or in this case, a touch of humor. It is critical that the idealized world of the dream is never shown as entirely unattainable.

To create these candy-coated apples, we worked closely with @spaethdesign , sampling many ways to achieve just the right effect. The apples looked absolutely perfect after being dipped in a special coating they expertly devised, with Tiffany Blue sticks inserted as the finishing touch. And of course we made our own tickets with hidden Tiffany messages on them. As they say, the devil is in the details.

Still, I couldn’t resist suggesting that one of those juicy red apples appear to have a bite taken out of it — somehow satiating the viewer’s appetite while gazing at those gorgeous Tiffany rings.

How do you see something in a new way? Draw it.

Jean Schlumberger’s little sentinel of wit and glamour, the Bird on a Rock, has been imagined and reimagined countless times. Yet it never loses its power to inspire — disarming even the most formal setting while presenting a jaw-dropping gemstone with seemingly effortless ease.

When painting in watercolor — and certainly when teaching it — I often think about the importance of spontaneity and looseness: a kind of controlled chaos that can go wrong very quickly.

Jean Schlumberger’s 1965 Bird on a Rock lends itself beautifully to that sensibility — the idea of catching a spontaneous moment in time. Too often, jewelry rendering can feel weighted or overly resolved, with a lack of movement that I try to avoid. In watercolor, color and line are our essential tools, and the joy of painting — something many of us first felt as children — should continue to be infused into the work we do.

Schlumberger famously stated, “I am a pencil. My drawing is paramount.” With that sentiment in mind, I created this small watercolor series for a special project in Japan. by @christopheryoung

In addition to my responsibilities at Tiffany, I am occasionally asked to illustrate — my first professional focus after graduating from Parsons. And I love it!

For a special project, I had the pleasure of reimagining Jean Schlumberger’s beloved Bird on a Rock with a sense of ease, joy, color, and expression. It was a meaningful reminder that artistry at Tiffany lives in everything that we do: in our creative gestures, our designs, our passions, and always in conversation with our extraordinary heritage. by @christopheryoung
