How heavily are we emphasizing the quotation marks around “follow your dreams” ?

I firmly believe that everything works out in my favor, but

Did you ever “follow your dreams” and immediately regret the logistics?

🤪

restarting my life in my 30s has taught me that gratitude isn’t just for huge events or purchases. Sometimes it looks like just mopping up my apartment floor after throwing a party that bae and I had always dreamt up in our heads (and then changing into sweats ofc) 😌

It’s not the fanciest and it’s not perfect but younger me would’ve been so proud of this lil life. 🫶🏽

I’ve been taking a much-needed dopamine break from apps like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc. I find that my anxiety, FOMO, and comparison monsters all come out when I spend the most time scrolling.

I’ve spent the past few days rekindling my joy doing *lower*-dopamine activities that are genuinely enjoyable but not addictive, yet still dopamine-producing, like listening to audiobooks, staring at the ceiling, listening to full music albums on the big speaker, painting, drawing, taking a college course, helping a friend relocate her tax office, decorating, and, of course, cooking.

Anyway, my sister introduced me to a book called The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt (@JonathanHaidt) and I found it to be eye-opening and very relatable. He mentions Gen Z a lot, but it applies to my generation (and all generations!) as well. I find that the more time I spend on social media, the more anxious I am, the more I overthink, and the more I avoid doing the “not exciting anymore” things I once loved. It’s available on Spotify so you can listen :)

This is just my experience though! This won’t apply to everyone. A lot of people i know are able to take socials in small doses and not be too affected by it. I am not that guy! I simply am not. I need barriers, boundaries, parameters, on my consumption of other people’s content as well as the creation of my own. It’s not you, it’s me!

My mother in law gifted me this tiny watercolor set for Christmas, which I’m absolutely in love with. Pictured here is a painting of my ‘phew and bro-in-law I did tonight while Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire played in the background. It was exciting, relaxing, and rejuvenating all at once.

So maybe just let this be a reminder that stepping away from socials and getting past that “ugh this is so boring and I can’t stand hearing my own thoughts” might be a bit of a detox phase (at least it was for me). Who knows, maybe give it some time and effort and you’ll find actual pleasure in silly little things like doing a puzzle?

And I hope this doesn’t sound preachy - really, I don’t! I just wanted to come on here and share what my experience has been these past several days 🫶🏽 xoxoxoxo cg by @christygee

Wait though, it’s not all bad!! TRUST MEE. Life is FULL of fumbles. ideas you swore were brilliant. reeeally awkward attempts. plans that actually ended up falling completely apart!

BUT every fumble teaches you something, does it not? Eventually, IF IF IF you’re willing to notice, they lead to microscopic wins, unexpected successes, and sometimes even a good outcome you never could’ve planned?!?!

So…keep fumbling, mates. Let’s cheers our alcohol-free bevvies to fumbling forward.

P.S. I hate American football but I do 🫶🏽 snack bar nachos and a good halftime show taken in Los Angeles, California by @christygee

Black sheep? No, babe. 🐑 rainbow sheep.🌈

Being the first and only openly queer person in my family is lonely and awkward sometimes, but it also means I get to live authentically and hopefully make it easier for whoever comes next. 🫡

Motherhood looks different for everyone. Mine looks like propagating houseplant babies from plants i already own because IN THIS ECONOMY, if I can raise a baby for free, I WILL.

And yes, 🤡🍊, you are tagged.

Here are some unhinged Catholic school beliefs I’ve unlearned:

1. I’m allowed to be BIS3XUAL???? Like what?! I was told men were only supposed to be with women and vice versa, as translated a million times by probably closeted white men. 😂
2. Attending church and donating to religious organizations that hide s3xual ab- users doesn’t automatically make me a better person.
3. I fought my mother tooth and nail over Confirmation classes. Legitttt waste of time. Force doesn’t create faith, sowwy.
4. I can believe in science and quantum physics and still be profoundly fascinated by the universe. Some people say God, love, Allah, or the universe. It’s all the same AND all different and filtered through our own unique perceptions.
5. A marriage outside the church isn’t valid in God’s eyes?! WHAT?! I am God! You are God! God is everywhere, in everyone, always! Get outta town with that.
6. In 2nd grade, I was so terrified of my notoriously strict nun teacher that I peed at my desk instead of asking to go to the bathroom during prayer. I carried that shame well into high school. That wasn’t discipline, it was straight up fear. I was taught not to voice my feelings, needs, or opinions. William, thank you for offering to help me that day. 😭
7. Watching formerly LGBTQ+-friendly people become hateful “in the name of Jesus” is beyond silly goose behavior. There really is no hate like Christian love. It’s not shameful to love someone, it’s shameful to tell them they’re sinning for doing so or that they’re doing it wrong. It’s shameful to say “I tolerate gay people” but then still look down upon them or “other” them. We’re literally all equals.
8. Going to hell for not being Catholic?! I’M DED. A religious label doesn’t make someone moral. 😂😂

Feeling lost or starting over in your 30s doesn’t mean you’re behind…truly, it doesn’t.

Finding yourself as an adult can look like changing careers, questioning your own old expectations, and curating a life that finally feels appropriate for YOUUUUUUU.

You’re allowed to keep shifting, to keep becoming ✨ taken in Morro Bay, California by @christygee

Recovering from people pleasing means consciously NOT ignoring mean or rude behavior patterns just to keep the vibes chill.

No revenge necessary, just a nice lil detailed internal Excel spreadsheet and an adjustment to said mean-person’s level of access to my world. Healing! ✨🤦🏽‍♀️😘✌🏽

To build self confidence and self trust, I say choose 1 small task that will make you proud of yourself. Nothing is too small so long as it pushes you out of your comfort zone and have to put in some effort. Walk down the block, eat 1 vegetable, even wash your face. Being stuck in the pits of depression sucks, so if you’re there, it can literally be the most basic thing, like brushing your teeth or drinking water when you wake up.

If you don’t accomplish it, fine! But if you do, won’t it feel pretty good? Picture it 😌
