The Impressionists had a secret funder. It was the guy they laughed at.

Caillebotte came from money, and the critics never forgave him for it — a rich man who paints must be a hobbyist. For nearly a century he was filed under "amateur."

Meanwhile he was paying Monet's rent, buying Renoirs nobody else would touch, and quietly financing the exhibitions that made all of them famous. He left the entire collection to France. The state turned most of it down.

Those rejected paintings are now the crown of the Musée d'Orsay. And this one — grey, wet, enormous — is one of the great city paintings.

Look at the mirror. Now look again.

A barmaid stands facing us, dead centre. Behind her, a mirror shows the whole roaring hall. But her reflection is shoved way over to the right, at an angle no mirror could ever produce — and there's a man in that reflection who is nowhere in front of her.

Manet was dying when he painted it. He never explained the error, and 140 years of art historians have not settled it. Some say it's a mistake. Most say it's the point: she's standing in a room full of people and she is completely alone in it.

Hangs beautifully over a bar cart, and it will get asked about every single time.
