my disability hot takes (that shouldn’t really be hot takes imo) 👀🩷

being undiagnosed doesn’t invalidate your disability
-you can be disabled without having a solid diagnosis
-many people live undiagnosed for years, and that doesn’t make their disability magically disappear

not being able to live independently isn’t a moral failure
-a lot of disabled people cannot and will not ever be able to live without some Kind of support or care
-making independence the main goal for disabled people only isolates and shames these people

disability advocacy has to be intersectional
-if you consider yourself a disability advocate but you do not think about intersectionality and how other social justice issues interlink with disability justice, you are missing a huge piece of the puzzle

disabled people are the only experts in living with a disability
-being in proximity to disabled people is not the same as being disabled yourself
-unless you have experienced disability yourself, you cannot truly understand the lived experiences we deal with
-this is why it’s so important to listen to disabled voices

disabled people couldn’t care less that you know someone who faked their disability’
-using an extremely rare situation to completely invalidate all other disabled people and their experiences is so ignorant
-it has absolutely no relevance to us or our disability

disabled people deserve to be able to spend money on things they like and enjoy
-expecting disabled people to never treat ourselves or do something nice for ourselves is ableist
-we deserve the same access and joy in life as everyone else

being disabled is not a trend, and it hasn’t become ‘cool’ 🗣️ disabled people deserve to be themselves and post online without being scrutinised 💙

if having a disability is ‘cool’…

-why do we still face ableism and discrimination daily?
-why isn’t the world more accessible and inclusive?
-why aren’t disabled voices listened to and amplified?
-why do we still get harassed and bullied for existing?
-why aren’t disabled people equally represented in the media?
-why don’t more people speak up for disability rights?
-why don’t more people care about disabled people?

disabled people can be cool, but living with a disability isn’t. what’s also not cool is...

-being constantly attacked by the media and non disabled people for finding our community and refusing to hide our disabilities

-young women who are disabled always being singled out as faking it, attention seeking or not being disabled enough

-being labelled as a ‘sickfluencer’ for speaking about or just existing with your disability or chronic illness online

-having to live in a world where ableism and discrimination against disabled people is so normalised

-our worth and right to exist always being debated, as if we aren’t humans too

-being more Likely to be unemployed or live in poverty, but having to spend so much more just to survive

-having to worry about inaccessibility and negative attitudes every time we leave the house

-living with extreme pain, symptoms or discomfort due to our disability or chronic illness

-being in and out of the doctors and hospital, often being gaslit and neglected

disability isn’t a ‘lifestyle trend’, and it’s not become ‘cool’

the disabled community has always existed, and will always exist, no matter how hard some people try to get rid of us

we deserve to exist freely and find our community. this is never something to be ashamed of

rage mail for ableists 👹

-it is never any of your business why someone uses a disability or mobility aid. stop being weird about it and let people use the aids that help them

-stop trying to pretend you’re only being ableist because you’re ‘trying to out fakers or grifters’. you are just harassing people for being open about their disability or chronic illness online

-saying that someone ‘doesn’t look disabled’ is not a compliment or some kind of gotcha moment. invisible and fluctuating disabilities exist

-being disabled does not mean you get ‘free money’. it means you’re more likely to live in poverty, and many disabled people do not get any financial support at all

-anyone can become disabled at any time in their lives. there is no such thing as being ‘too young’ to be disabled, and disability has no look

-you don’t get a free pass to be ableist just because you are disabled yourself. lateral ableism is just as damaging as any other form of ableism

-effective pain management is suicide prevention
-destigmatising mental health is suicide prevention
-disability support is suicide prevention
-affordable medical care is suicide prevention
-housing and food security is suicide prevention
-disability benefits are suicide prevention
-patient centred medical care is suicide prevention
-finding your community is suicide prevention

-disabled people shouldn’t be scared to speak about our lives and experiences, but many of us are
-disabled people shouldn’t be scared to call out ableism or inaccessibility, but many of us are

this cannot become normalised.
