Living with chronic illness often means learning to appreciate life in a different way.

Life may look different from what it once did, but that doesn't mean it can't still be meaningful, fulfilling and full of things worth looking forward to.

And you can genuinely be happy with the life you've built, while still missing parts of the life you had before.

The freedom to be spontaneous. The things you loved doing without a second thought. Or simply a version of everyday life that felt a little easier.

Missing those things doesn't mean you haven't accepted your circumstances. And being grateful for what you have now doesn't mean you have to pretend nothing has changed.

Gratitude and grief can exist together. There's room for both, and neither takes away from the life you're creating today. ❤️

The immune system is supposed to protect us from threats.

With autoimmune diseases, it mistakenly targets the body's own healthy cells and tissues instead.

A security system that's a little too enthusiastic about its job, you could say.

Unfortunately, the consequences are considerably less amusing than the analogy.

Sometimes a little dry humor helps make sense of the absurdity of it all. ❤️

What nobody tells you about living with chronic illness…

1. You can miss a life you're still living. Not just the big things, but the ordinary freedoms you once took for granted.

2. Being independent doesn't mean you don't need support. Some people become very good at managing things on their own. That doesn't mean it's always easy, or that they wouldn't appreciate someone noticing.

3. You can be happy and seriously ill at the same time. You can laugh, enjoy your surroundings, have ambitions and build a meaningful life. None of that makes your illness less real.

4. You sometimes become very good at hiding how things really are. Not necessarily because you're pretending. Sometimes it's habit, sometimes you don't want to worry anyone, and sometimes you simply want a conversation that isn't about your health.

5. You don't stop wanting to experience life. Your interests, curiosity and dreams don't disappear just because your health changes. Sometimes finding new ways to pursue them becomes part of everyday life.

6. You can adapt to a lot and still miss what you had before. Acceptance and grief aren't opposites. You can appreciate the life you've built while occasionally wishing things had turned out differently.

And perhaps the biggest thing I've learned is that chronic illness doesn't become your entire identity, even when it affects almost every part of your life. There's still a whole person behind it. ❤️🙏🏽

There is a kind of grief that comes with chronic illness that isn't always talked about.
The grief of losing your independence. Of plans that never happened. Of dreams that suddenly feel further away.

Sometimes, it's missing the person you used to be. Sometimes, it's grieving the things you can no longer do, or the things you have to think twice about.

And sometimes, it's grieving a future you imagined so differently.
You can learn to live with your illness and still feel that loss.

You can find beautiful moments in your life and still wish things had been different.
These feelings can exist together.

And you don't have to pretend that everything is okay to appreciate what you still have.

I didn't cancel because I didn't want to see you.
I was looking forward to it. Maybe for days.
But when you live with chronic illness, making plans doesn't always mean you'll be able to follow through.

Sometimes your symptoms get worse. Sometimes your energy disappears. And sometimes, no matter how much you want to be there, your body simply won't let you.
And the disappointment? We feel it too.
Because cancelling plans doesn't mean we stopped caring. 💚

"But you looked fine yesterday."
Sometimes, what people see is only a tiny part of what you're experiencing.
They might see you smiling, going somewhere, or managing something that seemed impossible the day before.
What they don't see is how much effort it took. The symptoms you were dealing with. Or how you felt afterward.
And sometimes, even when yesterday really was a better day, today can be completely different.
Living with chronic illness means your capacity can change, often without warning.
Looking fine isn't the same as feeling fine. 💚

Not knowing how you’ll feel tomorrow. Whether you’ll be able to do what you’ve planned, or whether your body will need something entirely different.

Sometimes it’s hard to explain how much that uncertainty weighs on you. You’re living through today while wondering what tomorrow might ask of you.

If that feels exhausting, you’re not alone. 💚

These days, getting dressed and putting on some mascara is often my biggest physical achievement.

Chronic illness can change your life enormously. It doesn’t change your worth.
