2:43:47 and a 4-minute personal best at the boston marathon!

I’m really (really) proud of this one. I’ve been chasing a PR in the marathon since fall 2024, and yesterday I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I played smart, stayed composed, and felt incredibly strong across a notoriously difficult course from hopkinton to boston. throughout 26.2 miles the mind inevitably becomes loud, but I’ve come to learn that marathoning ultimately comes down to how long you can stay calm.

no training block is ever perfect, and this one was no exception. It’s been super challenging (often feels impossible!) these past few months balancing school, studying for the CPA exam, and running a whole lot of miles. but I love the thrill of creating a new limit, disrupting probability, and coming out stronger because of it.

back to chicago for round 2!

2:47:04, 6:23 min/mile, 26.2 wicked miles.

this race means a whole lot more to me than the numbers. last november I ran a massive personal best at the indianapolis marathon after coming off one of my best marathon blocks as of yet. I had built this empire of running and was ready to keep knocking time off the distance. fast forward to december, I found out that I had completely fractured one of the metatarsal bones in my left foot (overtraining!). for 20 weeks, I didn’t run at all and spent the winter pedaling with one foot on a stationary bike to maintain some semblance of aerobic capacity. when finally given the clear to begin running again, it was weeks of a monotonous run/walk to not put too much stress on the foot at once.

coming into this race I wasn’t really sure where my fitness was. I struggled this summer to get back into marathon shape and dealt with various other injuries along the way. more than anything, I was mentally overwhelmed and frustrated. but I ended up surprising myself yesterday and, like clockwork, was ticking off 6:05 minute miles relatively effortlessly for the first 20-ish miles after finding a group to hang with. when I PRed the half marathon at mile 13 I knew I was probably going too quick but greater risk, greater reward, right? around mile 17, my legs ended up cramping a bit earlier than I would’ve expected them to, and I found myself in a dark place the last 5 miles trying to put one foot in front of another.

nonetheless, I am beyond proud of myself for putting up a 2:47 marathon after all the time off and injuries of the past year. to come quite literally a second off my PR was redemption, revenge, and an almost means of catharsis. running, most of the time, is not glamorous, but I’ve come to appreciate the quiet thrill and relentless pursuit of working hard for something.

thank you to anyone and everyone who has supported me this past year. to those that have logged miles with me, tracked me live during the race yesterday, and gotten me to the start line. it means a ton.

indianapolis marathon ‘24!

26.2 miles, 2:47:03, 6:23 min/mile
a 10 minute personal best & 8 minute boston qualifier.

proud does not even begin to describe how I feel. for 18 weeks, I pushed myself further than ever before. I ran the most weekly mileage I have ever done (peaking at 71 miles/week!), ran some of the fastest workouts I have ever ran, and moved beyond limits I didn’t know possible.

the marathon is grueling. it’s relentless and often feels calamitous. but moving onwards beyond that terrain has taught me more about myself than anything else. to be steadfast, to get out of my own head, and to never (ever) give up on yourself.

a huge thank you to those that got me here. to my family, to @andrew.sannchez for biking next to me each saturday long-run, to @sophia.hinkebein for being the best training partner, and to @risept_nwa and @amjchiro for getting me to the start line in one piece!
