Heard of “ferritin face” on social media? There’s a little truth behind the trend, but it’s not quite that simple. MUSC Health Registered Sports Dietitian Alaine Mills shares what to know about iron, ferritin and getting enough of this important nutrient.

Ferritin is a blood protein that stores iron, so checking ferritin can help identify low iron stores. Low iron can contribute to symptoms including fatigue, feeling cold, dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and pale skin.

But before you reach for an iron supplement, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian. Too much iron can build up in the body and supplements can cause side effects such as constipation and stomach discomfort.
