February, 1968.

Yesterday was my mother and father's 53rd Wedding Anniversary. I had a busy day and didn't get around to sharing these photos, but wanted to mark the occasion.

So here they are, honoring the traditional crossing of the threshold. by @chuck.dorman

Here's another picture, one of my favorites, at the Honeymoon Hideaway. I have been trying to find the exact location with little luck. Elvis named his house in California The Honeymoon Hideaway so everything is harder to fish through online. This is likely the Poconos in PA. by @chuck.dorman

February, 1968.

To be fair, life isn't easy for anyone. That being said, my parents had some pretty tough obstacles in life. Both died in their early 60's which, of course, was devastating to me.

Mom's problems were with her health, which really started when she was in her mid to late thirties. She had about six miscarriages and thirty-seven surgeries related to rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis (among other things). Two were much needed organ transplants that were a direct result of the various medications she took through life. This goes a long way towards explaining my genuine and intense mistrust of pharmaceutical drugs. You might find this funny considering some of the things I've put in my body over the years, but still. They DID give her relief from the swelling and psoriasis, and she understood the risk. It helped, but time was shortened.

My Dad was in Vietnam until August of 1967, then joined the police force outside of D.C. in Seat Pleasant, pretty stressful stuff all around. When he retired from county, he joined the Maryland State Police and did that until they moved to Florida around 2001.

Near the end of their story, he proved to be a match to give Mom a kidney, I remember his excitement vividly. It was then that they found his colon cancer, which would indirectly lead to his passing at 61 in 2007. Mom died ten years ago on March 18, 2011 at 64.

Nonetheless, there were many happy years and wonderful memories. They were very generous people and were lots of fun. Mom didn't start going in and out of hospitals until I was around seven or eight and the arthritis didn't become severe for a few years after that. But whatever was going on, they supported me and gave me everything I ever wanted. I owe them all of it.

So today I'll remember them this way, when they were young and filled with so much hope and joy. I miss them. by @chuck.dorman
