The Fantastic Jerry Saltz and Carroll Dunham just concluded a marvelous talk about his new paintings at the New York Academy of Art. Everyone would serve themselves by listening to the recorded talk and seeing the show. A masterclass by both artist and writer in elucidating what might take place in the studio of an artist. Dunham speaks with an open-ended and precise language of process, form, content and outcomes. @jerrysaltz @nyacademy by @chuckwebster

Whoever was here, I’m jealous. Alex Chilton is officially the coolest person in the universe. iTunes liner notes: Hardcore Alex Chilton fans understand the mysteries of music better than most. They don’t need dry ice or laser lights to enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll show. When the power went out during Chilton’s first set of a two-gig night at New York City’s Knitting Factory one evening in 1997, fans stuck around and were treated to Chilton joining them in the audience with a borrowed acoustic guitar; this set of tunes was luckily recorded on a hand-held cassette recorder by longtime fan Jeff Vargon. The sound quality is bootleg, no matter how carefully professionally mastered. But the fun (the audience never stops laughing) of hearing Chilton struggle to remember old country songs, unexpected pop songs (The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfer Girl,” and “Solar System”), and even Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” is a moment in time worth preserving. Loudon Wainwright III’s “Motel Blues” is the one song that could be called expected, and it’s performed like Chilton still had a hellhound on his trail. by @chuckwebster

Strange paper mache figures made by Otis Kidwell Burger. Angel and Devil. Otis Kidwell Burger (1923-2021) lived on Bethune Street for 58 years, where her life intertwined with some of the most intriguing and important figures in the Village during that time. She rented a room to Jane Jacobs in the 1950’s, during which time she wrote “The Death and Life of Great American Cities,” and threw parties at her home attended by Norman Mailer and several other great 20th century literary luminaries. In her interview, Ms. Burger reflects on the major changes she has seen in the Village since the 1950’s and discusses her incredible family history, which includes her great-grandfather, Sidney Howard Gay, the Editor of The Anti-Slavery Standard, who is sometimes thought to be the namesake of Gay Street. She also made sculpture. These are for sale to the one who loves them the most. DM for info by @chuckwebster
