Annie Chu & Rick Gooding are honored to be recognized this year by the LA chapter of the AIA with the 2026 Gold Medal Award (@aia_la ). This award is the chapter’s highest distinction and honors more than three decades of influential work that has helped define Los Angeles’ cultural landscape.

“Presented annually by the AIA|LA Board of Directors, these prestigious honors celebrate those whose contributions extend beyond the design of buildings, advancing architecture as a catalyst for civic engagement, cultural enrichment, and positive social impact. … ‘For more than thirty years, Annie Chu and Rick Gooding have made a lasting contribution to the cultural life of Los Angeles. Their work is distinguished by its intelligence, restraint, and enduring relevance. Through projects that serve the public and strengthen important institutions, they have shown how architecture can quietly but profoundly enrich our city,’ says Toni Lewis, AIA, 2026 President, AIA Los Angeles.”

We are deeply touched by this announcement – and wish to congratulate all of our fellow 2026 Board of Directors Award recipients, several of whom are dear friends and lifelong colleagues.

Chu-Gooding was engaged to renovate the one-story Veneklasen House (1959) and to add a second level to create a primary bedroom suite and balcony. Our design goal was to interpret the original design intent, to expand upon the integration of architecture and landscape, and to enhance the connection between the new interior and the remarkable mature landscape.

The Veneklasen House was originally designed by #KennethLind and is one of the early works of Case Study architect #PierreKoenig. Small additions and updates were subsequently designed by #JosefVanderKar.

On this remarkable project we were thrilled to work alongside Harris|Anderson (General Contractor), Mark Tessier Landscape Architecture @mt_landscape_architecture, and Structural Engineer Joseph Perazzelli.

Join us for the Opening Reception of “If I Had a Hammer: The Poetry of Tools” 🔨 — featuring works from #SUBTERRANEA by Rick Gooding. The event begins at 6PM at the @henrybuilt Los Angeles showroom on Thursday, July 16th.

“Since 2010, I have been developing an anthology of pencil drawings collectively titled Subterranea. These pieces reimagine the built environment as a cross-section of both physical and psychological layers—
channels of memory, geology, and engineered systems. The series draws inspiration from excavation drawings, mapping conventions, and the aesthetics of technical documentation while embracing
abstraction and open interpretation. Though they appear diagrammatic at first glance, the works operate as visual poems about what lies beneath and between our daily environments.”

✏️25 of the 120 Subterranea drawings will be on display through September 17th.

“Fashioning Chinese Women” at @lacma was yet another opportunity for our @chugoodingarchitects team to explore color more deeply. Here, the color palette was designed to support each group of garments and to promote the galleries’ distinctive atmospheres. Background colors that elevate, complement, or contrast each collection. The result of rigorous study of the garments and research from our project team.

Chu-Gooding had the pleasure of designing the new exhibition “Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity,” which opens at @LACMA on Sunday, June 14th. The exhibition traces the evolution of women’s fashion in response to sociopolitical transitions, globalization, and modernization in Chinese society, from the fall of the Qing Dynasty up through the Cultural Revolution.

As part of the exhibition design, Chu-Gooding employs the traditional siheyuan (Chinese courtyard house) as a spatial concept, chronicling the evolution of the elaborate garments and rich textiles that defined Chinese fashion through the mid-20th century. We have so much appreciation for the curators and staff at @LACMA, fashion designer Jason Wu, and all of our collaborators who helped bring this exhibition to life.

The inaugural exhibition at the new home of the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center, "Bright Golden Haze" (2020) explores works of art that use light to create place and identity, both physical and conceptual. The range of artwork includes drawings, paintings, photographs, video, neon, hologram, light installations, and immersive interactive environments, packed into a gallery shaped by fifteen faceted walls. These parameters created design challenges akin to conceiving a sixteen-course meal.
