Jacques Derrida, “Mal d’archivio” (1995)

Off of the Tech-Dependency Plan.

Tom Skinner - batteria e percussioni
@electrobeard - contrabbasso
@francescaterberg - violoncello
@chelsea__carmichael - sax tenore e flauto
@robertstillman_ - sax tenore e clarinetto basso

If you say ‘A Love Supreme,’ that’s what I hear first, every time. It’s like a beautiful city, but we don’t enter, because we have to go through the portals, the corridor, and then we reach the entranceway. When that chord hits, that E major, the doors start to open. That’s what it’s like for me - the very first invitation to this beautiful place that’s here, that’s in our heart and spirit.”
Alice Coltrane

Roads to Sintīr ~ First look at the work in progress

Roads to Sintīr is a long-term film and sound research project by Tania Feghali, following the traces of what she describes as an “endless sound”: a drone sound that keeps resurfacing across different forms, instruments, and geographies, while being profoundly and subtly connected to a place in us that remains untouched across time and space.

The first phase of this research was initiated within the framework of Shluq – Moving Archives, a project by Chullu Agency in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Tunis.

The sintīr, a skin-covered bass lute taking different names and shapes across latitudes, becomes a metaphor for this quest. Its name carries another resonance: sintīr, sentir, sentire- to feel, to perceive, to connect with something at its core.

Unfolding from Tunisia, the first phase of the research moves through vernacular and pastoral traditions, Amazigh and Sufi practices, oral transmission, landscapes, and encounters with musicians. Working alongside Yacine Boularès, improvisation is at the core of this research: different stories, sounds and instruments coming together through the same urge, allowing a language to emerge that needs no translation.

Presented at JAOU as the first public manifestation of this research, moving image, field recordings, and glimpses of an evolving film form a temporary constellation, unfolding throughout the evening alongside live improvisation and conversation.

Off to Tunis to present “Black Med, Chapter VIII” as part of JAOU Encounters — Becoming The Ocean, a programme of roundtables and conversations that moves across different scales: from international law and the Mediterranean border regime to contested memory, artificial intelligence, the production of evidence, and the instability of the image itself.

“Black Med, Chapter VIII” — commissioned by OGR (Turin) on the occasion of The European Pavilion — outlines a possible narrative of European identity that is articulated and multifaceted, in contrast to xenophobic simplifications. A sound journey through different borderlands that challenges narratives based on the immobility of borders: land borders, oceans, and borders enforced by European Union member states are traversed, exposing the incoherence of a Europe that shuns its transnational and migratory roots.

Presented as part of Shluq – Moving Archives, a programme by Chullu Agency in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture in Tunis.

Invernomuto presents: Black Med, Chapter VIII
Le 4ème Art Theatre, Tunis

Black Med is the investigation and documentation project that Invernomuto has been pursuing since 2018: a continuous and avowedly non-geographical selection of songs, stories, and paths across the Mediterranean.

Divided into different chapters, the Black Med listening sessions are based on a DJ set supported by a series of projected slides containing theoretical texts and backstories related to the musical pieces, grouped around elegiac themes. The sessions explore different trajectories of sound, touching on topics such as alternative uses of technology, migration, peripheries, and interspecies relations.

——

Becoming the Ocean begins from the proposition that we are living through an extinction burst: a moment when political, historical, technological and epistemological systems intensify precisely because they are approaching the limits of their capacity to organise the world.

Across two days, Jaou Encounters brings together artists, writers, researchers and political thinkers to consider what happens when inherited structures no longer hold, and what forms of knowledge, relation and political imagination must be produced in response.

The programme moves between different scales: international law and the Mediterranean border regime, contested memory and artificial intelligence, the production of evidence and the instability of the image itself. by @chullu_agency

Torna <Shluq.

As part of Shluq, Chullu and IICT present:

Poetry, poetry, take me away.
The body as an altar

A collective ritual in which the written word is stitched, painted, and carried upon the body. The garment becomes an altar, and the body a space for the inscription and activation of poetry—in dialogue with the practices of the Antigruppo, a movement that brought verses onto walls, tablecloths, and shirts.

✦ Workshop open to everyone
✦ October 23rd, 11 am_14 am
✦ DAYONE, Marsa, Tunis
✦ Free entry

Simona Squadrito is an educator, author, critic, and independent curator. She teaches at NABA in Milan and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Syracuse (within the MADE Program). Her research focuses on artist’s books, experimental poetry, and independent publishing, with a particular interest in the intersections between curatorial practice and contemporary visual culture. She is a co-founder of REPLICA— an Italian archive of artist’s books — and KABUL magazine.

Giulia Currà is an artist and a “mover” (in the sense of someone who facilitates relocations/transitions) since 1988. Founder of Traslochi Emotivi, Casa Cicca Museum, she collaborates with Gilda Von Rümelin on “testi eccedenti” and Cora Baratti on il Salotto delle Preziose.
