Manifesto of Fruitfulness: This Sunday, Pastor Jon continued our series by exploring the fruit of evangelism and what it means to share the good news of Jesus with the people around us. In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul describes us as ambassadors for Christ, entrusted with the message of reconciliation. But how we share that message can look different from person to person. Whether through our own testimony, an invitation into community, honest conversations about faith or a prompting from the Holy Spirit, we are called to meet people where they are. Pastor Jon reminded us that evangelism begins with the heart of Jesus, who pursues those who are far from God and welcomes people in the midst of their brokenness. As we learn to share the hope we have found in him, we are called to do so with gentleness and respect, trusting that the work of bringing people to Jesus is not ours to accomplish alone. taken in New York City by @church.nyc

Thomas Keown grew up on a small sheep farm in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles,” three decades of political violence that left him an angry teenager with religion but no relationship with Jesus. That changed in college, through two housemates whose faith was confident, outward-facing, and costly in a way his had never been. Freed from the fear of failure, he left his hometown for a career spanning media, politics, and for-purpose work across the UK, the US, Africa, and Latin America, including work for one of the two Nobel Prize–winning signatories of the Belfast Peace Agreement. Today, Thomas is the founder and CEO of Many Hopes, a nonprofit rescuing children from injustice and equipping them to become adults of influence able to rescue others.

In this story, he shares how one simple invitation, offered on a normal night in a Soho bar, bore fruit he could not have imagined, and why obedience has long-term implications.

This past Saturday, we hosted our Vocational Mission Forum, gathering professionals from across our church to consider how faith shapes the way we work, lead and influence the places we’ve been given. Pastor Jon Tyson, COTC lay leader and actuary Ben Griffith, and Goldman Sachs Managing Director Ben Grizzle shared theological frameworks, personal experience and practical ways to bring faith into our professional lives, including Workplace Prayer and Workplace Alpha. Resources and recordings from the Forum can be found at cvm.nyc. taken in New York City by @church.nyc

What does eternity have to do with the way we live right now? This Sunday, Pastor Sam Gibson continued A Manifesto of Fruitfulness in 2 Corinthians 4:16–5:10, asking what an eternal perspective actually produces. Eternity does not make this life less significant. It gives us a different way of seeing our suffering, our work, our priorities, and even the people we pass every day. What if the greatest aim of our temporary lives was simply to please the One we will enjoy forever? taken in New York City by @church.nyc

Michael and Beatrix Tafoya moved to NYC just before 9/11 because they were convinced God had a distinct call and purpose for them.  Soon after, they met Jon Tyson and it became more clear that part of that purpose was to begin laying the groundwork for a church which has since become Church of the City.  In addition to serving as church overseers for many years, Michael and Beatrix are the parents of three adult kids.  Michael serves throughout Upper Manhattan and the Bronx as a Medical Director for CityMD, an urgent care network.  Additionally, he serves on the board of the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, which advocates to strengthen the support system and continuum of learning for children and youth. Beatrix worked for many years in fashion as a color and concept designer until she became a stay at home mom. taken in New York City by @church.nyc

Ben and Ale moved to New York City in 2015 with a deep ache to see a move of God. They were drawn to the entrepreneurs, creatives and young professionals who come here chasing a dream, and to the ones that same dream had worn down or left weary. Ben works in workplace experience and culture at a commercial real estate firm, and Ale is a coach, speaker and writer who founded The Nett, a modern approach to Christian singleness, dating and preparing for engagement. Fifteen years into marriage, their calling has settled into something the city is short on—being spiritual parents to the people God puts in their path. They’ve been part of Church of the City since its doors opened, and they serve on our Prayer Team and lead our Healthy Soul course.

We talk about what spiritual parenting looks like in a city where so many people are far from home, why ambitious people so often struggle to believe they’re loved, what it takes to care for your soul in a place that rewards you for neglecting it, and what they’ve learned about faithfulness after a decade of praying for revival in New York. “God knew that little childlike part of me that had joy and had dreams and had these crazy ideas about the world. He created me that way! He doesn’t want me to suppress them (the dreams) and He actually delights in the dreams that He puts in our hearts. He delights in the way that he made us. I just feel like that’s been a really crazy journey to go on of just having fun with God and the fact that he actually delights in it too. It’s not just like he’s far off — he’s having fun with us.”

Allison has big dreams for the future. In the immediate future, she’s hoping for more prayer meetings and connections at upcoming competitions and that there will be more structure to what has already formed — not just prayer meetings, but a prayer movement in parkour.

One day, she really hopes that there will be a discipleship training school for athletes. Allison sees that there are core parallels between the parkour community and early church, the grassroots nature of it all and a lot of travel. This allows for people to get close very quickly, building trust and friendship with people from all around the world and all walks of life.

Allison would always ask the Lord to get sent to the ends of the earth but now she’s watching that happen through her participation in this sport, and through the fulfillment of a dream. As she put it so beautifully, “He delights in the dreams He puts in our hearts.” taken in New York City by @church.nyc

This Sunday, Pastor Jon continued A Manifesto of Fruitfulness, teaching from Galatians 5:13–26 on the fruit of the Spirit.

We are all being formed by something, but we are also being deformed. Sin teaches us to organize our lives around ourselves, while the Spirit transforms us from the inside out. The fruit of the Spirit isn’t something we manufacture by trying harder. It is the evidence of a life being transformed by Christ. Fruit comes through union, not imitation; by beholding, not striving; in community, not isolation. As we remain planted in Him, the Spirit slowly forms us into people who reflect the character of Jesus. taken in New York City by @church.nyc
