THE AGE OF CHURCH CONFERENCES (90s-00s)
*READ THE CAPTION BELOW*

During #blackhistorymonth, we’ve been highlighting some grand moments from the era of 90s church culture. The 90s-00s era was the peak church conference era. Quite literally, you could close your eyes, randomly pick which conference you wanted to attend, and you would be guaranteed to have a high time in the Lord. Today, the focus is on mainstream/national church conferences, but back in this era, even your LOCAL church conferences were phenomenal. Sure, we had Azusa, Woman Thou Art Loosed, Full Gospel, ManPower, Megafest. Still, you also had Soul Winners, Fire in the Rockies, Dominion Campmeeting, Koinonia Conference, Spirit & Truth, and so many others!! Most of these conferences drew thousands from all different races, backgrounds & nationalities, and not all the hosts were Black clergy, but let’s be clear: Black Church Congregant attendance MADE these conferences, and, more importantly, Black Preaching voices MADE these conferences what they were.

This thread features the following conferences:
Azusa - hosted by Bishop Carlton Pearson
Woman Thou Art Loosed - hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes
Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship - hosted by Bishop Paul Morton
ManPower - hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes
Fire In The Rockies - hosted by Bishop Dennis Leonard
Dominion Campmeeting - hosted by Pastor Rod Parsley
Soul Winners Conf - hosted by Bishop G.E. Patterson
Koinonia Conf - hosted by Bishop Ron Gibson
Spirit & Truth Conf - hosted by Bishop Eddie L. Long
Megafest - hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes
Harvest Fire Conf - hosted by Bishop Clarence E. McClendon
Back to Bible Conf - hosted by Bishop T.D. Jakes
Women Weapons of Power (W.W.O.P.) - hosted by Dr. Juanita Bynum
Perfecting Church Holy Convocation - hosted by Bishop Marvin Winans

The funny part is, this isn’t even a FRACTION of all the conferences happening during that time. There was high praise happening EVERYWHERE!

Which was your favorite conference to attend? What’s your most memorable moment?

#BlackChurchOfThe2000s (SWIPE RIGHT)

The 2000s era of Black Church came with much excitement & anticipation. If this era of the church can be summed up in one word, it would have to be ‘SHIFT’. We saw a shift from mass choirs to a more praise & worship team-style format. We observed the incorporation of dance within the worship experience through liturgical dance, mime dance, youth step teams, and other forms. Gospel artists that were more in tune with the youth came to the forefront: Tye Tribbett & G.A., Kirk Franklin, Tonex, etc. Moreover, we saw the fast emergence of the charismatic movement with voices like Bishop T.D. Jakes, Noel Jones, Eddie L. Long, Bishop Paul Morton & so many others. That & SO MUCH more happened during these 10 years (2000-2010). Here’s just a brief snapshot of what some of those sounds sounded like.

#90sBlackChurchThread (SWIPE RIGHT)

*READ THE CAPTION*

The 90s era of Black Church culture was unique & unusual. We observed rapid trend changes in the realm of gospel music, including the shift from traditional to charismatic preaching, the emergence of church conferences, and the gradual rise of the mega-church phenomenon. We witnessed the true last era of traditional Gospel choir music. We saw new voices emerge, such as Bishop T.D. Jakes. We saw denominational boundaries get crossed with the boldness of Bishop Paul Sylvester Morton, Sr., & The Full-Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship. We saw kingdom women of the Gospel, like Prophetess Juanita Bynum, arise and become a force in the kingdom. That & SO MUCH more happened during these 10 years (1990-2000). Here’s just a brief snapshot of what some of those sounds sounded like.

🔥 Bishop T.D. Jakes Goes OLD SCHOOL!
Circa: 1999

“Most people only perceive God through institutions”
- T. D. Jakes (1999)

The old folks/church didn't have all the technology we have today. The old church had no LED walls, stage lights, sound booth/studio, musicians' pit, or HD cameras. However, they had spirit! The old saints knew how to love God and Heaven! They did more with less. What kind of communicative relationship would you have with God in the absence of the aesthetics of church accouterments?

Creflo Dollar - I’m Working on Something!
Circa: Perfecting Church Holy Convocation 1997

There are three entrances: the mouth, the eyes, and the ears. When your faith is a seed, you must be careful of what you consume. You don’t want anything negative to come in and uproot the inner seeds you’ve been planting. Guard your heart!

WHOOPING: The Musicality of Black Preaching (SWIPE RIGHT)

Whooping is a staple within the culture of not just Black Preaching, but the Black Church. After the preacher has exhibited premier storytelling, engaged with the congregation in call-and-response, fulfilled his biblical exposition, and enamored the listeners with poetic language, there’s one thing the church is awaiting in great anticipation: BRING IT ON HOME DOC. This thread features a range of Black preaching celebratory expressions from the Baptist & Pentecostal Charismatic Tradition.

The whoop, also known as sermon close, is the celebratory part of the message. This is what Albert J. Raboteau talked about in his text, A Fire in the Bones: Reflections on African-American Religious History:

“The preacher begins calmly, speaking in conversational, if oratorical and occasionally grandiloquent, prose; he then gradually begins to speak more rapidly, excitedly, and to chant his words and time to a regular beat; finally, he reaches an emotional peak in which the chanted speech becomes tonal and merges with the singing, clapping, and shouting of the congregation.”

Whooping has been reduced to some caricature of mere entertainment by many who either despise the Black Preaching Tradition or have been drunk with the wine of self-hatred. Regardless of how anyone feels about whooping, It’s an art, it’s a witness, it’s a tradition, and most importantly, it’s OURS! May the whoop NEVER die!

THE EVOLUTION SERIES (SWIPE RIGHT)

Bishop Noel Jones’ evolution has been a true testament to theological and doctrinal preaching. Bishop Jones has always emphasized laying a hermeneutical substratum for his theological presentations. Anyone who’s studied his preaching over the years knows it leans heavily on theologians like Paul Tillich and Karl Barth, while incorporating psychology and packaging it beautifully with charismatic overtones, all while staying true to his Pentecostal roots.

Some of us saw him in the 80s when he pastored at Bethel Temple in Longview, Texas. Some of us remember when he came to LA to succeed the late Bishop Robert W. McMurray. Some of us remember him shouting at us under a pew in a church service. Down through the years, his preaching has impacted and touched so many lives across this nation. No major church conference in the 90s-2000s didn’t feature his name.

He’s uniquely gifted and unusually distinctive. He’s always been in a class by himself and a true model for what 21st-century cutting-edge ministry was supposed to look like. There will never be another Bishop Noel Jones.

THE EVOLUTION SERIES (SWIPE RIGHT)

The evolution of Dr. Jamal Harrison-Bryant has arguably been one of the most unique experiences to witness. The way he’s been able to juggle the many worlds he walks in has been an exemplary model for balance. He has evolved over the years and continues to evolve today.

Some of us remember when he first started as the national youth director of the NAACP. Some of us remember when he first opened Empowerment Temple. Some of us remember hearing crazy-title sermons like: I’ve Got Almond Joy, The Thong Song, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Don’t Mess With the Mailman, Hot-Oil Treatment, We’re All Flying First Class, and so many more. For the most part, his preaching blended hip-hop-infused preaching with psychology, captivating the minds and ears of a youthful generation. He could be preaching with twists, timbs, and a FuBu jersey one moment, and a freshly tailored suit with a wide Windsor knot the next.

At any given moment, you could flip the TV and see him preaching on TBN, or speaking on a national syndicated BET panel discussion, or out in the streets with the community, leading protests to lend his voice to the injustices plaguing African-American communities. From the NAACP to Empowerment Temple to the streets (Baltimore, Ferguson, Sanford), to NewBirth and beyond, Dr. Bryant has continued to reinvigorate himself over the years to serve the present age, both inside and outside the four walls of the church.
