Solwezi,Zambia
.
.
.
In 2021 I went to Zambia 🇿🇲 to build a skatepark with @wondersaroundtheworldorg . Before leaving California I began to receive messages every other day from @phimzco asking for product. He mentioned to me how him and his crew had a few boards that they would share with more than 10 others. I looked into the travel time from the location of the project we were doing and it was more than 20 hours.

While building @spluke_ got Covid and started coughing blood. I went with him back to the capital to get him medical care. I took 15 complete skateboards with me to give to @skateboarding_solwezi since we would already be half way to Solwezi. The 12 hr drive took over 20hrs due to many unforeseen circumstances, keep in mind @spluke_ is coughing blood looking like he gana fall over and die the whole time (crazy story for another time).

I took the bus to Solwezi from the capital and once again there was massive delies, taking me over 18hrs to get there. I didn’t know at the time that @phimzco was a kid and was so dope to see him and crew pull up. They showed me around Solwezi and pointed out to me that there isn’t much concrete to skate. The place with skateable concrete was a strip mall were they would often get kicked out.

I pretended to be an “Olympic scouter” for skateboarding and propose a “contract” to the people that over saw the mall security with a skate school I made up. We came to an agreement where @skateboarding_solwezi community will be allocated time for sessions. I filmed this edit during my time there.

Before leaving I promised I would one day come back and build a park if they continued to skate. They kept there end of the bargain and now it’s my time to do the same. I got the land donated from the government and all that is left is the funding.

In these crazy time let’s not forget the power we all have to have a positive impact on the planet. Power is in the hands of the people not governments. by @chuweed805

2024 recap. Van life, car accident, not being able to walk, being homeless and all the other shit life always throws at us, and still finishing school. Reminded me so much of growing up. It can be painful to relive the past, but feels like you have to in order to heal from it. I’m beyond grateful for all my old and new friends. Shout out to SD/Baja California for showing me mad love. To any one I’ve ever cross paths with show no weakness and never back down. Love y’all. by @chuweed805

Meet Jesus “Chuey” Martinez, one of our 2024 CSEF Dean’s List Scholarship Recipients 🎓

Chuey is a life-long skateboarder from Oxnard, CA currently based in San Diego. A world traveler and member of the global skateboarding community, he found his calling in Ghana on a skatepark build with Wonders Around The World. On this trip, a bad knee injury befell Chuey, which eventually inspired him to study to become a physical therapist. Currently at San Diego City College, Chuey is pursuing his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, when he’s not skating or working with concrete!

Chuey will receive a $5,000 Dean’s List Scholarship awarded to our top applicants as voted on by the CSEF Board of Directors.
