FILM LIVES! 🎞️ My Project for the Year was to eBay hunt for a whole squadron of Yashica Twin Lens Cameras so that my Upper Levels of Photo Students can try out Medium Format 120 Film with one of the most mobile, precise, and legendary cameras out there. Next Week I’m going to introduce them, so today I’m bagging and tagging the whole bunch for checkout.

This is a hard end of an era, as announced by @thehopleaf today. Only a few weeks ago, I brought friends there to enjoy some Kwak in their unique “horse-carriage-to-go” glasses. We all thoroughly loved a good strong round of them and it felt like I’d be able to keep going back forever, and I had found my new place to enjoy a funky Kwak glass whenever I had the itch. But Kwak today announced they’re going to stop producing the glassware, and beer nerd hearts are breaking or soon-to-be breaking everywhere around the world. I hope they bring it back at some point, because there is no cooler experience of drinking beer. In the meantime I swooped a set on eBay to enjoy at home with special guests. Long Live Kwak! by @chuybenitez

First ride after recovering from a really random Sciatic Nerve injury that kept me hindered the last two months. Couldn’t have picked a more beautiful stretch of the Des Plaines River Trail. Although, some of the underpasses were still very flooded from the heavy rains this week. I found detours and it was a beautiful, beautiful day to get back on a bike for 26 miles, pain free!!!! taken in Independence Grove Forest Preserve by @chuybenitez

Finally got to meet @thaliagochez and have her sign my copy of Chicano Camera Culture! It was so great that @chihumanities invited her to come speak at @explorenmma as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival.

It was a stellar selection of speakers for the Chicano Camera Culture talk! @pilsenita @evferrer @deannaledezma @thaliagochez

Thalia had quite the line after the talk.

It was also great to have @joshtfranco come in to moderate the Chicano Camera Culture talk. @evferrer and @deannaledezma gave insightful and detailed context to the exhibition and book, and @thaliagochez and @pilsenita provided career stories that connected to everyone.

Thanks for the great talk @chihumanities & @explorenmma! taken in National Museum of Mexican Art by @chuybenitez

Yesterday was World Photography Day, so today for my Photo 1 classes, I showed them my Daguerreotype and Tintypes to show them how photos were made on metal in the past and also show them how small photos were in the past.

Always a fun show and tell! The Daguerreotype is from 2004, and the Tintype of me is from 2015. by @chuybenitez

Summa Time Chi Adventures!

I wanted to show Elizabeth my favorite Chicago beaches, so we started with Oak Street Beach.

Skyline View from North Avenue Beach.

It was a Red Flag Day, which meant big waves on the beach.

It was great to see the waves hit the concrete barriers at Oak Street Beach.

We biked out to 12th Street Beach, a hidden gem in Chicago.

Then biked to the river and took a Wendella Sunset Cruise that takes out onto into the lake.

Views were perfect and our tour guide had a great playlist of music for the cruise.

Caught the Full Buck Moon rising over the lake.

Coming back in, there were great water reflections with views of Navy Pier and anchored boats.

The Wednesday Fireworks show started right over us as we came back thru the river.

Then went and picked up famous Phil’s Pizza and enjoyed it at 31st Street Beach.

The full moon was bright and lit up the waves at 31st Street Beach.

We discovered O’Donovan’s in Lake View and saw they had Friday Night Magicians. They’ve been having magic shows since the original owner started them in 1915, so it was cool to see such the longest standing magic show in the U.S.

Hit up Skylark with the Homies and finished their Keg of Eagle Lake SPEKTO COOLER! Yes! Slimer’s favorite Hi-C Flavor, but now as a green hard seltzer!

Elizabeth’s visit finished out with a trip to the Galloping Ghost, the world’s largest arcade! It was super-epic! We got to beat many games, including Simpsons, Ninja Turtles, and many more.

These Texans had to play a few rounds of Armadillo Racing!

We found the Star Wars Shooter corner.

Spent time in the Racer Aisle with Cruisin’ World and Mario Kart.

Elizabeth showed me the epicness of Jurassic Park shooter and keeping the TRex at Bay! taken in Lake Michigan, Chicago Lakefront by @chuybenitez

In Memoriam: Gil Cardenas was my first and biggest mentor and collector. He bought my first portfolio of work and exhibited at Latino Studies at Notre Dame for my Graduation in 2005. He connected me to Mexican American Studies at University of Houston when I went there for grad school, which then connected me to other pivotal mentors like Luis Jimenez and Delilah Montoya. Over the past 20 years, I have shared with him my successes as an educator and artist, and he always was proud of me and believed in me like no other.

This is the first time one of my portraits that is actively exhibiting turns into a memorial for the person in the portrait, but I think it is totally fitting for Gil and a way he would have wanted to be memorialized. So if you happen to be able to make it out to the Cheech in Riverside, CA or the MACC in Austin, TX, you can see Gil in the full glory of his collection there. I am forever grateful and thankful that Dolores and Gil were able to make it to the Cheech opening, and that I was able to talk about Gil’s huge influence to my life and so many others then.

Thank You Gil for all of the wisdom, knowledge, support, and friendship you gave me. I was changed and bettered from Day 1.

An extra thank you to @roj_rodriguez for being there to also build an amazing friendship with Gil and Dolores in my absence from Texas. Thank you for being a brother-in-arms and supporting them when I could not. by @chuybenitez

A Capturing of my many campsites this Summer. Each spot was special, magical, and well-enjoyed. Well, until the Gold Mountain Wildfire hit and I was genuinely scrambling my way out of Colorado 😅. I’m very grateful for the time spent in New Mexico and Colorado, and all these spots gave me a much needed reset.

First up was my longest stay at Redondo Campgrounds in Jemez Mountains, NM. ⛰️

Also Redondo Campgrounds, NM at night.

Camping along Medano Overpass near Great Dunes National Park, CO.

Camping ON Great Dunes National Park, CO with Beau.

At Rainbow Hot Springs/ West Fork San Juan River, CO

Cunningham Gulch, CO

Cunningham Gulch Tacos & Tequila, CO

Cunningham Gulch Fire & Tequila, CO

Orvis Hot Springs, CO

Thistledown Campground, CO

Evacuated to Black Canyon of the Gunnison, with smoke from wildfire making the Moon red.

NEW MEXICO BONUS! To rewind a couple weeks, when we were driving around the Jemez Mountains, suddenly there were like 100 cars parked right at a Jemez River Crossing above the Jemez Falls, and at the East Fork Trailhead, and I was like “OK, something cool has to be that way, let me check it out on a weekday. And sure enough, discovered what is known as El Cajete Canyon Pools. It was AMAZING!

This was the approach to the swimming area, one last canyon following the Jemez River before you reached the pools

Hearing some waterfalls and getting excited

So cool to see how the water flowed through here

Climbed up above the pools to see the lay of the land and the waterfalls.

Climbed over the high ridge to explore the highest pools

Hummingbird!

High Pool Area. Pretty sketchy ridge had to be climbed to get here.

Swimming the deepest, highest pool! Fair warning, it had leeches 😅.

Went down to below the waterfall to check it out.

Timelapse below big waterfall.

Beaver!

2nd Beaver!

You definitely needed water shoes/ sandals for the many river crossings to get to the pools

Small Rainbow Trout

Walking sticks that people would leave at head of trail for you to use at the many water crossing. Very thoughtful, actually! Also proof of how many people are here on the weekends! taken in Jemez Falls by @chuybenitez
