Took a hiphop class at Playground the other day, and here’s a little side-by-side of the original choreo vs. my adapted version. One of my favorite things is rolling into a room, marking the combo the whole time, while everyone kind of hesitates to talk to me. I mean I’m always being super chatty! But at the end I throw everything I have into the last few runs for recording. 😌

There’s a reason I save my “full out” for the end: my body can only handle so much before things start dislocating, shaking and giving out, not to mention my heart can only take so much. When I roll in tho, I’m not just learning the choreo, I’m learning how to translate it. Every count, every texture, every intention has to be reshaped so the movement still matches the quality of dancers on their feet, or compliments the choreo when the travel/footwork world doesn’t match the reality of what my body and chair can do together as a team.

I see a lot of wheelchair dancers try to stay inside this tiny “bubble” of movement when adapting, but honestly? The best reactions I get are when I don’t hide the chair at all. One day people won’t even notice it, but right now, it’s still shiny and new to a lot of folks. “Inspiration p*rn” is inevitable for the time being, but we can flip that into education and representation until the industry stops being shocked and starts integrating those of us with untapped skill sets into their works.

Learn your body. Learn your style. Build your confidence. And get out there. Don’t try to become anyone else, just be the absolute best version of you. ♿️✨
