Self-doubt is a common experience for writers, almost a rite of passage for creatives.

It’s often said that if you haven’t questioned your abilities, you might not truly be a creative. I can certainly relate to that sentiment. When self-doubt creeps in, I find myself turning to writers whose work I deeply admire.

As a writer, certain authors profoundly influence me, not just by entertaining but by shaping my understanding of the craft itself. Take Jane Austen, for example.

Her prose subtly reveals love through emotions deeply rooted in society, always with a profound underlying lesson. Then there’s Austin Kleon, whose bold, simple, and direct language is incredibly impactful and immediately grabs your attention.
My ongoing challenge is trying to mirror the essence of their genius—Austen’s emotional depth and Kleon’s striking clarity—without losing my own unique voice. It’s a constant balancing act.

Perhaps I’m overthinking it, and the key is simply to be myself.
