Did you know that 70% of the yachts we inspect for our clients are off-market?

If you’ve ever felt like you've seen every listing and nothing feels right, that's probably why. Some owners sell privately, to selected buyers through trusted networks, so the right yacht may never be advertised.

Access to them means more options, less competition, and a more discreet search. by @chyadvisory

Buying new means taking the steepest part of the drop in value. Buying brokerage means confirming the condition before you commit. Which one makes sense depends on the buyer.

Part two of two: swipe through how they compare on depreciation, condition and warranty, and where each one fits, with advice from Michael Donnan. by @chyadvisory

Survey reports don't come with a pass or fail.

They record a vessel's condition, and what the findings mean for your purchase is left for you to decide.

Normal wear sits alongside items affecting structure, steering, fuel or fire systems. A moisture reading is a pointer, not a verdict. And few findings come with a cost attached.

Our role is to translate every finding into plain terms for our clients: what it is, how serious it is and what it will cost to put right, so they can decide whether to go ahead, renegotiate or walk away. by @chyadvisory

The buyer’s agent model has been part of Australian property market for years. In yachting, it’s less common.

Cohen Handler Yacht Advisory exists to bring that same independent, buyer-only approach to the marine market, combining Cohen Handler’s renowned buyer advocacy with Michael Donnan’s years of marine experience.

Boat Sales listings only tell you so much about what you’re actually buying.

The difference between a good-looking boat and a good one usually comes down to a few direct questions, not a longer inspection.

Save this one for the next listing that catches your eye. taken in Sydney by @chyadvisory

Ask a buyer what matters before they own a boat, then ask again three months in. The answers are rarely the same.

Going in, the list is usually cabins, deck space and how the boat looks at the dock. A few months aboard tends to change it. The boats people wish they’d looked at twice are often the ones dismissed on a first inspection, for reasons that turned out to be cosmetic.

Swipe through five things buyers tend to weigh differently once they’re living aboard, and save it for your next inspection. taken in Gold Coast, Queensland by @chyadvisory

There’s a lot that happens between agreeing on a yacht and actually owning it.

Survey, mechanical inspection, and working through anything that needs fixing before handover, it’s rarely as simple as a signature and a set of keys.

For first-time buyers particularly, having someone there for all of it is what makes the difference.

A good yacht purchase is one you understand completely, strengths and shortcomings included.

That means learning what you need now and in the years ahead, then following through with the quotes and tradespeople to bring the vessel closer to your brief.

The first call isn't a sales pitch, and it's not a commitment either.

It's a conversation about what you're actually looking for: how you want to use a boat, what budget makes sense, and what kind of timeline you're working with.

That's genuinely all it takes to find out whether working together makes sense, no pressure attached either way.

If you're even considering a purchase, get in touch and see where the conversation goes. by @chyadvisory

Docking is where even experienced owners tend to tense up.

Most of what goes wrong happens before you’re even close to the dock, not once you’re already lining up.

An online listing is meant to sell you the vessel, even if that means not giving you the full picture.

Specs that matter get buried next to ones that don’t, and language that sounds reassuring is rarely backed up by anything specific. Reading past that takes a different kind of attention, the kind that only comes from doing this for a living.

Swipe through five details worth checking before you ever step onboard, and get in touch if you’d like a second set of eyes on a listing you’re considering. taken in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia by @chyadvisory
