Exploring architecture’s role in transformation, place and reuse
POSTS STORIES REELS
EXTENDED UNTIL 18 OCTOBER! Berlin, bring us a place in need of a new future. This autumn, we are transforming the Aedes space into a temporary CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF studio. Running from 22 October to 3 December 2026, the exhibition titled CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF = Building the Existing City will not just present finished work. It will turn the gallery into a place of architectural production, opening up the design process as it unfolds. OPEN CALL: 4 TRANSFORMATIONS FOR BERLIN We invite Berliners, public and private institutions and civic groups to submit a building, site or urban situation in need of transformation. Throughout the six-week exhibition, our team will develop proposals for four selected challenges directly in front of gallery visitors—offering a live insight into the work of architects through research, design, discussion and collaboration. Find out more about the open call, running until 11 October, via the link in bio. Alongside the design process, the exhibition will present 20 projects across four themes—PLAY, LIVE, ADAPT and ACTIVATE—through drawings, models, films and ongoing research. A weekly programme of reviews, lectures, conversations, screenings, book talks and open studios will make the gallery a platform for testing and developing ideas with the public. Join us at @aedesberlin for Ondřej Chybík’s opening lecture tomorrow, 3 November at 18:30! In his lecture, Ondřej, co-founder of our studio CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF Architects, will introduce the ideas and architectural approach behind Building the Existing City, the central theme of our six-week exhibition and open studio at Aedes Architecture and Space. Drawing on selected projects from our studio’s practice, he will explore how adaptive reuse, urban regeneration, and carefully considered interventions can unlock the potential of existing buildings, public spaces, and urban structures. The lecture will be followed by an open discussion where everyone is welcome to contribute and ask questions. Language: English Admission: Free The lecture series will continue with Amin Taha’s presentation on Thursday, 5 November at 18:30. Full programme and details at the link in bio. In less than two weeks, our studio will open the first monographic exhibition in Germany, on 22 October at 18:30! Until 3 December 2026, we will transform @aedesberlin into a live working architecture studio, where visitors can follow a real design process as it unfolds. We will bring part of our team directly to the gallery to work on four specific projects for Berlin – selected through an Open Call. Conceived as an open process rather than a static display, the exhibition called CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF = Building the Existing City will therefore serve as a platform for exchange and debate with the organisations and communities connected to each selected place, experts, academia, and the broader public. The final proposals will then be presented at the closing event. Alongside the open studio, the space will be activated by a programme of film screenings, lectures by renowned architecture professionals, and workshops for universities and the public. In parallel, 20 of our projects will be showcased through four core themes—PLAY, LIVE, ACTIVATE, and ADAPT—exploring how architecture can strengthen public life and existing neighbourhoods. The second project selected through our open call 4 Transformations for Berlin, currently being developed by our team at @aedesberlin, is Frankfurter Allee! Around Frankfurter Allee station, our team will investigate how new high-rise development can improve the wider urban environment. Submitted by the district administration of Lichtenberg, with a private landowner’s proposed tower providing a starting point, the brief addresses a well-connected but fragmented area where transport and retail dominate.  The proposal will focus on connections between the station, neighbouring residential areas and public spaces, improving pedestrian comfort and transfers between modes of transport while introducing more greenery and places to spend time. Our exhibition CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF = Building the Existing City connects this challenge with our past project – Nusle Brewery neighbourhood in Prague. Project details are now on display at @aedesberlin.  Everyone is welcome to visit throughout the six-week exhibition, talk to our team, participate, and follow the design process as it unfolds. The final proposal will be presented at the exhibition closing on 3 December. #chybikkristof #aedes #openstudio #activate #innsbruckerplatz by @chybikkristof
We opened the doors to our live working studio and exhibition at @aedesberlin yesterday! Over 300 visitors joined us to unveil the four Berlin-based projects selected through our public open call. As of today, our team has actively begun developing these projects right at the gallery space throughout the six-week-long exhibition. The selected projects reflect the exhibition’s core themes: ACTIVATE — Innsbrucker Platz LIVE — Frankfurter Allee ADAPT — Dragonerareal PLAY — SpOrt365 Sommerbad Seestraße We’re happy to work on such remarkable sites with the partners of each project. The final design proposals will be presented at the closing on 3 December. Alongside the live design process, which visitors are invited to engage with throughout the exhibition, we present 20 of our projects from the past decade, organized around these four themes. Each theme is further explored through a live accompanying programme of guest lectures, workshops, film screenings, and urban walks. The full programme is available via the link in our bio. We’re thankful to Miriam Mlecek and Dunya Bouchi from @aedesberlin for joining our founding partners Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof for the opening speech, and to @annabeatahablova for an incredible slam poetry performance. Thank you also to our partners for their support in making this exhibition possible: @nadaceppf @grohe_czsk @brnomycity @vitra @mmcite @tschechisches_zentrum @czech.tourism. And especially, thank you to everyone who came and become part of our open studio. Photos: @apolenatypltova #chybikkristof #aedes #berlin #openstudio #architecturaldesign by @chybikkristof
We’re happy to introduce the first project — selected through our open call 4 Transformations for Berlin for the theme ACTIVATE — which our team is now developing as part of our open studio and exhibition CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF = Building the Existing City: Innsbrucker Platz! Innsbrucker Platz currently functions primarily as a transport interchange, surrounded by barriers to free movement. With a new residential neighborhood emerging nearby, it creates an opportunity for its redevelopment by redefining the site’s role within the urban fabric. During the exhibition, our team will explore how this site can evolve into an open public space for the surrounding neighborhood and local communities. Submitted by the district administration of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the brief calls for better pedestrian connections between the square, nearby green spaces, and areas beneath the railway viaduct — creating opportunities for meeting, play, and everyday recreation. Building on an existing feasibility study, the proposals will also consider planting, shading, and rainwater management. The project draws on our experience of transforming Mendel Square in Brno, presented in the exhibition as an example of how a transport-dominated space can support an active public life.
The beige-brown colour of rammed earth mimics the surrounding of Mulbekh hills, ensuring the Spring Dales Public School harmonises with its natural environment and local history. As our first project in India, we look forward to seeing the space serving its purpose soon and remaining active within the high-mountain landscape. In collaboration with the Czech NGO @himalajskypatron. #chybikkristof #architecturaldesign #mulbekh #rammedearth #vernaculararchitecture by @chybikkristof
The Spring Dales Public School in Mulbekh’s ground floor classrooms and facilities for teachers are now enveloped in rammed earth walls and timber decking, giving the volumes their seismic resilience. The roof public space will be finished in the upcoming phase. Seasonal construction at Spring Dales Public School in Mulbekh is entering its final stage before the winter pause.  Settled in its northern Indian landscape, the site’s silhouette is already taking clearer shape while awaiting completion next summer. At the heart of the sports campus, the new Maksimir Stadium brings the park, the city and the game together. A broad canopy unites the stands and shelters terraces that open towards the surrounding landscape. These spaces connect the stadium to the park, creating places to meet and spend time before and after the match. Beyond match days, concerts, exhibitions and conferences keep the stadium active throughout the year. From the approach through the park to the shared energy of the stands, the design builds on the atmosphere of match day and remains part of everyday life beyond it. Our proposal extends Maksimir Park into an open sports campus. Tree-lined routes and public squares connect the surrounding neighbourhoods through a car-free landscape. At its centre, a public meadow offers space for play, informal sport and gathering. Cafés and terraces along the stadium’s edge support daily life, while shaded squares accommodate markets, exhibitions and match-day celebrations. Open throughout the year, these public spaces bring sport into the everyday life of the city.
