Kayakin’ 24x24 Multimedia

I recently visited the Aspen Art Museum where they have a lovely rooftop with artwork displayed as well as a view of skiers coming down the mountain. While there, I noticed that all the POC visitors (including myself) had gathered there on the rooftop and were joyfully watching the skiers as if they were part of the exhibit.

This made me think about POC and how we are often spectators in outdoor spaces. Especially in a place like Aspen where I assume these visitors had the means to participate if they wanted to. Was it lack of access growing up, gate keeping, or a fundamental cultural difference? What was causing so many of us to take a spectator role in this environment?

I’m excited to share this first piece in a series called, “Spectators” where I explore the answer to that question. The series will highlight POC as spectators to outdoor activities while other-worldly colors and schemes further highlight the alienation between two groups.

Moab at Sunrise was painted for my beautiful friend @hay_theregoodlookin who just got married in the most beautiful location on earth! I visited the location with her a couple weeks prior to the wedding and was so inspired!

You may have noticed it’s been a little quiet around here lately, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve been getting back to creating for the sake of creating instead of for a job. Being a full time artist was always a dream of mine and I decided to let go of that dream when I realized that I wanted to keep art as something I do for fun when I feel inspired rather than something I do to make money on a deadline. I will always be an artist. I don’t know how to be anything else, and I’m excited to do it on my own time again.
I’ve been making less promises and commitments with my art and it has been freeing me to be able to experiment again and I can’t wait to share with you where I’m heading! There will be changes around here including lots of experimentation and less posting, but I hope you’ll stick with me for the ride! 🧡 taken in Moab Desert, Utah by @ciara.bourne

Over the summer I was honored to create this mural for @fcmuralproject in my hometown, Fort Collins. Equity in the outdoors is something I’ve always been passionate about. I was so grateful for the opportunity to create this and dedicate it to my late grandma who loved being outdoors. I felt an amazing sense of community during the process, from my sister @knoel33 letting me crash at her house, to @jbeanart covering streetlights for me and inviting us to her home for dinner, to meeting the other amazing artists I painted along side @tofke_tuck and @erinjoyart, to taking my grandpa to finally see it this weekend. This one was my largest and most meaningful piece yet. I am overflowing with gratitude reflecting on the opportunities I’ve had in 2022. ✨ taken in Fort Collins, Colorado by @ciara.bourne

Truthfully I’ve had SO MUCH support. I can’t believe I’m part of the first NFT gallery ever to be in any state Capitol 🤯. I want to thank @irlart__ for always believing in my work and giving me opportunities I could’ve never dreamed of.

My #augmentedreality mural titled “Caulifro” for @streetwisearts festival addresses food insecurity in Black America. Because of the racist systems in place that lead to food deserts, lack of access to healthy food and drinking water, the building of cancer-causing power plants in Black communities, etc., Black Americans are more likely to suffer from certain health issues. And once we’re in the hospital the injustice doesn’t end there. Black children are more likely to die after surgery than white children, and Black women are 3x more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Our health has been completely disregarded in this country. Because of this, more Black Americans choose veganism than white Americans at almost 3x the rate. This radical act of self-care is a form of protest against the racist systems in place that are designed to kill us. We matter. Our health matters. ✊🏾🥦

Did you know the Luna moth is only alive for about a week after it emerges? They’re only here for a short time, but they shine big and bright in the night. That’s exactly how I want to live! We’re only here on this earth for a short time, I hope to spread my wings and shine through my art while I’m here. They also represent new beginnings an a quest for truth and knowledge. Maybe it’s because I cut my hair, maybe it’s because I’m almost 30, I can feel the change in the air and I’m ready for the next stage. 🦋
