POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The Abbey Theatre has today announced playwright Ciara Hanley, as the recipient of the 2026 Lady Gregory Bursary for Playwrights, awarded for her play Dublin Underground.

The Lady Gregory Bursary for Playwrights provides space and time for the recipient to work on their play in the Abbey Theatre Artists’ Studio with dramaturgical support of Literary & New Work Associate, Rían Smith.

Every script submitted via the Abbey’s year-round script submissions process is automatically considered for the bursary opportunity. Lady Gregory’s creative values of energy, intensity, a belief in the power of community and a sense of justice are all considered when selecting a suitable recipient.

Congratulations Ciara 👏

Same title, almost entirely new script!

The biggest thank you to @abbeytheatredublin and their stellar new works department for helping me to develop my wee baby, Dublin Underground, over the past few months.
I’ve been working on this script on and off for over a year, so to finally feel like the story I wanted to tell matches the script in front of me is so exciting ☺️

If you’re a director or producer looking for a silly, heartfelt play full of talking animals and female friendships, coffee is on me 😁

Onto the next!! 🫡🏋️‍♀️ taken in Abbey Theatre by @ciarahanley05

It’s been such a joy to get to know and work with so many talented, sound, and driven creatives this year. A special nod to everyone who helped bring Scripted to life, what a lovely afternoon it was!!

Closing out this MFA with some incredible new friends, a sturdier writing toolkit, and an excitement for whatever’s next (oh and minus some debilitating endometriosis, shoutout surgeons, you guys rock). by @ciarahanley05
