Most people never connect the two.

But how you breathe directly influences how your spine stabilises under load - and when that system breaks down, your back pays the price.

Last weekend I presented on Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation at the Inspire Health + Fitness Conference @genesisfitnesscookshill. It’s some of the most important work I share, because it changes how people understand their bodies, not just their symptoms.

Breathing. Movement. Stability. They’re not separate conversations. taken in Newcastle, New South Wales by @ciaran.lavers

Nobody walks into a room asking to be taught. Everyone asked to be fixed. I get it... fixed sounds faster. But I've watched the same loop hundreds of times: rest, settle, flare, repeat. It only breaks when we stop treating the body like it's fragile and starting training like it's capable. taken in Newcastle, New South Wales by @ciaran.lavers

The adjustment isn't the problem. What happens after it is.
Manual therapy can opens a short window where your brain drops its guard. Most treatment ends right there. Ours starts there: retraining the movements your brain has been avoiding, while it's ready to learn.
That's the difference between feeling better for a week and building a back you trust.
If you've been stuck in the crack-relief-repeat cycle, this is why. by @ciaran.lavers

Same person. Different support. 30 minutes apart.

The only thing that changed is whether her body remembered how to support itself from the inside.

Your trunk is meant to stabilise through pressure - the diaphragm drops, the deep abdominal wall and pelvic floor respond, and the whole cylinder pressurises before you move. That pressure is what protects your spine.

When that system goes quiet (and for a lot of people, it has), the body still has to find stability somewhere. So it borrows it. Usually from the back extensors. The spine gets pulled into extension, the joints take load the muscles were meant to share, and over time that constant low-grade compression can feel like tightness, stiffness, or pain that won’t shift.

It’s not a weakness problem. It’s not a flexibility problem. It’s a coordination problem - the body has forgotten a pattern it used to own.

The image on the right is a demonstration of what postural alignment can look like when that deep system briefly comes back online. It’s not a treatment outcome. It’s a window into a phenomenon. The pattern fades unless it’s trained, and different bodies respond differently.

Most “core work” misses this entirely. You can’t crunch your way into a system that runs on pressure and timing. taken in Forma Health & Rehabilitation by @ciaran.lavers

If you’re new here, here’s who I am and what this is about.

I’m Ciaran. Chiropractor and founder of FORMA Health & Rehabilitation in Newcastle. I started FORMA because I kept seeing the same gap in how allied health works, patients get treated until the pain goes and then they’re on their own. But that’s not enough for someone who’s active, competitive, or is looking for a long term result.

At FORMA we work with people through three stages: Reset (get out of pain), Rebuild (restore capacity), Perform (get your body to where your life needs it to be).

I’ll post here about my life, rehab, movement, longevity, and occasionally the honest stuff, like the fact that I run this clinic and I’ve been managing a wrist injury for weeks instead of fixing it. If that sounds like something you want to follow, welcome.

Plus, if you want to book in at FORMA, link’s in the bio.
