You’ll probably only see me doing one of two things this month:

1. Running to prepare for my first half marathon 🏃🏽‍♀️
2. Watching movies with the coolest people at @tiff_net and @ciffcalgary (shout out to @electric.cinema.club too) 🍿

HOY I’m still here :) I’m excited to be helping bring a special screening of ASOG to Canmore through @canmorepride on July 9, in partnership with @samasamabowvalley, @baklabayan.yyc, and @bowvalleypridenetwork 🌈

ASOG is a screwball tragicomedy starring a cast of real life Super Typhoon survivors. The film follows Jaya on a road trip to a drag pageant and, along the way, they encounter Filipinos enduring the impacts of climate change. Flipping the conventions of the road movie on its head, ASOG is a stunning and profound ode to the power of solidarity amidst struggle.

🗓️ Thursday, July 9
⏰ 6:30-9:30 pm (screening at 7 pm)
📍 artsPlace Canmore (950 - 8 Avenue)
🎟️ $12 (purchase via the link in bio)

The screening will be followed by a short panel discussion with LGBTQIA+ Filipinx folks. Stay tuned for panelist announcements!

This screening is made possible by @cisf_bpoc and venue partner, @artsplacecanmore 👏🏽 taken in artsPlace by @ciermae

I am so excited to bring this film to Calgary!

Treasure of the Rice Terraces (2025) directed by Kent Donguines. When a Filipino-Canadian filmmaker returns to his homeland to reconnect with his roots, he learns about the ancient art of Kalinga tattooing from the legendary 108-year-old artist, Apo Whang-od, discovering how this once-forgotten tradition has shaped the Filipino identity today.

date: Sunday, December 7
time: 6-9 pm (screening at 7:15 pm)
location: burnswest theatre @theconfluence_yyc
free entry/pay what you may (limited seats!)

This screening is made possible by @cisf_bpoc’s Connect Program, venue partner @theconfluence_yyc, and community partners @baklabayan.yyc and @humainologie.

Whether it was at home in Calgary, or on my travels to Banff, Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal and, most recently, Toronto, I have been blessed to be surrounded by joy, creativity, and love and have made some beautiful memories.

But this needed to be posted first.

We met at a time of celebration, but we left in grief.
We felt kinship, then came undone after a devastating act of violence.
The story of how I finally met someone I have long admired will always be laced with tragedy, but coming together months later gave me a sense of healing that I truly can’t describe. I have a happier memory now that I can choose to remember instead. I could not be more grateful.

So much love to you, my forever kaibigan. 🤎 taken in Toronto, Ontario by @ciermae

Holding space for a lot of emotions today. 4 weeks ago was the Lapu Lapu festival and the eve of my second 10k run in Vancouver, that I didn’t end up doing.

Safe to say that this last month, I haven’t been at 100% and that includes training. So waking up today to do the 10k in Calgary, I knew I couldn’t set an expectation like trying to beat my time from last year (especially since I’ve been on only two short runs since Lapu Lapu and it’s a different city with different elements in general) but I couldn’t help thinking about it. At the very least, I wanted to run the whole thing which I didn’t do last year.

Before it started, as we were in the middle of the corral surrounded by people, I started to panic. I kept looking backwards to make sure it was safe. I couldn’t listen to my music because I wanted to make sure I could listen for danger. I had an overwhelming feeling of hesitation. Thanks to my husband, I was able to calm down. Once I caught my breath, the urge to run and mentally escape took over.

The run itself, while tough at some parts, was completely normal and I am grateful for that.

And while I can’t help but feel a little sad that I didn’t get a better time, I won’t cry over it. But I’ll cry because I accomplished my goal of running the whole thing while carrying the weight of that day and this past month. I’ll cry because my parents and grandparents watched for me to run by. I’ll cry because it was a beautiful morning and everyone got to celebrate safely. I’ll cry because April 26 and the 11 lives taken will always be in my memory, but today, I felt healing. 🤎 by @ciermae

One week later.

Yesterday I wrote in the book of condolences at the Legislature in Victoria and felt some weight lifted off of me. As someone who has always loved to write, I realized that it would help my healing to write about a day that I will carry with me forever.

One week ago, I had just had the most beautiful night and morning with my SHADES community in Calgary and had excitedly been telling everyone about my plans for my upcoming week off. On the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, my husband and I flew to Vancouver as I was registered to run the 10K Sun Run with one of my best friends who was travelling over from Victoria.

We arrived, checked into our hotel, and made our way to a sushi restaurant for dinner before we went to the Lapu Lapu Festival. I had originally thought the festival was only an 8 minute walk away from the restaurant but as we were finishing dinner, I checked maps and it was actually an 8 minute drive. It was around 7:20PM. We knew the festival would probably be about done by the time we got there but we still wanted to go. We even joked that Filipinos would’ve started the party late anyway. We took a picture on our way there, content from a delicious dinner and a beautiful day so far.

We drove to the festival, parked, and made our way to the very corner it would all start just a little while later. We could see that many vendors had already packed up and we could hear that the concert was nearing its end. I was so excited that the first tent I stumbled upon that was still up was Pinay Collection, a social enterprise I have been following for years. I spent a long time there picking out many things to buy and I also had the absolute pleasure of meeting the founder. I told her how much I admired her and the work she does. We hugged. I was so, so happy.

There were so many little decisions that saved me, my husband, and my friend that night and also kept us together. There was another booth, almost directly across from Pinay Collection, whose merch also caught my eye but we decided to continue walking and check out the food trucks first. My friend had seen people he knew and stayed behind to chat with them.

Admittedly, these posts are “highlights” while the lows of March brought an overwhelming sense of loneliness and feeling off-course. Here’s to things looking up (at least personally), less snow, and more intentional joy. 🌈

1. Sad? Show up to a rally and surround yourself with humans who care
2. Disconnected? @theoratoryshow will fix you, especially if @sincerelytobi is performing ✨
3. Moody? This vegan egg will make you giddy
4. Weary? Go on a walk with someone cute 🐕‍🦺
5. Blue? Cuddles on the couch and long conversations will ease your soul
6. Low? CrossFit with @danplusryan will kick. your. ass.
7. Tired? Yeah, after killing that workout 🥵
8. Down? A bag of popcorn bigger than your head is a good distraction
9. Teary? Watch @aniceindianboyfilm and crying will just be part of the experience anyway 🥹
10. Glum? Go to a cool colourful exhibit like real life I Spy
11. Anxious? Hug a loved one 🤎
12. Uninspired? Get lost in a book 💭 taken in Life by @ciermae
