📕The Contemporary Circus Handbook:

POSTS STORIES REELS

I wrote a book. ⬇️

📚2.5 years in the making, 25+ interviewees, it’s all in here. If you want to make a dance, circus or physical theater show, or really take on any collaborative endeavor, this is for you.

📚I wrote this to myself, to the person I was before I made 3 shows with @cirque_barcode_circus - everything I wish I had known about the big picture of making and touring shows, funding, organization, building your team and more.

📚I want this to help more people make more shows- I want you to make YOUR show. Remove the roadblocks, get more good art in the world.

💸People have asked the best way to buy. It’s available everywhere, but my personal favorite is via Modern Vaudeville Press, my publisher (and publisher of other circus books- how cool is that?). Link is in bio. E book will be out near the end of the summer probably. Copies might still remain @la_tohu as well in their boutique.

💚Special thanks to my editor @kimzyn , publisher @thomwalljuggler and @modernvaudevillepress and second editor @domaskbz

🎪Many more thanks to all of the contributors that made this possible: @zander_howardscott @gypsysnider.the7fingers @shana.carroll @heloisebourgeois @masonavich @lydiabouchardofficiel @ezdanza @lewie.west @cloudyt @charliewheeller @joe_pinzon @shortroundprods @jrogham @cirquemechanics @di.robson.7 @cirque_barcode_circus

Tuesday Trick Tutorial! Penguins!

Not just for ball juggling, you can play with this catch for boxes too! by @cigarboxjuggler

Thursday Throwback: Long Mill's mess sequence!

If you check out Tumbling the Lumber, the youtube video I pulled this from, you can see I filmed it all over one day, just bopping around a sunny Montreal and catching fun tricks the day before I took off on tour with The 7 Fingers. Still a great memory for me- skateboarding around on a beautiful summer day, catching box tricks.

How to (actually) juggle cigar boxes, 3 different ways.

It was windy as heck so I wasn't able to do much of a breakdown on this one, but here are a few variations to try. by @cigarboxjuggler

Thursday Throwback! One of my favorite tricks I've ever landed, the 4 box one night castle! (Build the castle? I learned the name in Japan but I can't remember which castle is which!)
I've got a Tuesday Tutorial out for the 3box version check it out!

Tuesday Tutorial: Twiddles.

Here are three little cigar box juggling tricks you can play around with. I don’t often do these onstage, they’re not big flashy tricks, but they’re cool moves you might not have tried, so check them out!

Box Flip
Finger Spin
Body roll

Throwback Thursday! These are all "inside catch" 4 box variations, where the last box in the air is caught within the line, rather than in the hand.

The last trick i do in the sequence is one of my favorite 4 box tricks of all time- it's a flash, a place on and an inside catch all at once. Everything has to line up just right for it to work, and when it does it's so satisfying.

Oh man, almost forgot today! Here’s a fun one, and I’m sure you can make plenty of variations: spin the boxes more, do both simultaneously, add takeouts or cool end catches… the sky’s the limit! by @cigarboxjuggler

Throwback Thursday! This is from 2009, first year at ENC.

This is in the "chuck one box high and do a 3 box trick under it" category, which I eventually moved away from. I was more interested in what tricks felt more unique to 4 boxes (although you could argue that a lot of ball juggling siteswaps are basically just throw one ball high and do another trick under it).

Tuesday Trick: Foot Catches

Oof, my back! Foot catches are super visual, but they make you work for them!

Try this one with shoes first, and if you're performing, with your show shoes, since it really changes the feel.

Throwback Thursday! First year at the National Circus School of Montreal in 2009. Crazy to look back at these old sequences, back when I was still figuring it all out...
