Installation views of He Broke Us.

A project that took shape at my residency with @jaipurcentreforart @rmz_foundation and Is on view until the 7th October as part of the group show called between arrivals.

100 ceramic plates, inkjet photograph and perfume

Images do not change; our understanding of them does.

He Broke Us is a three-part installation comprising one hundred broken ceramic plates, a perfume, and a photograph titled On the Edge. Rooted in the experience of growing up with a father struggling with addiction, the work examines the shifting relationship between photographic representation, perception, and memory.

Photographs taken at twelve, once shaped by the innocence of looking up to a father, acquire a different meaning with time, revealing the addiction that fractured the family. The broken plates evoke the rupture of domestic life, while the perfume recalls the discomfort and anxiety of family dinners. On the Edge captures the anticipation of an impending rupture.

Moving from visual density towards emptiness, the installation reflects the fragmented and selective nature of memory, exploring how the past is continually reinterpreted through the changing gaze of the present. taken in City Palace, Jaipur by @cigarettegreys

The Presence of an absence is a solo exhibition on grief loss and absence at @triartandculture

How do I remember a person, a moment, or a life when there is no photograph to hold its trace?

Photography allows the past to return through its material image. But what remains when the image was never made?

I begin with this absence, exploring grief and the loss of my mother through photography, sculpture, scent, and text. Across four interconnected bodies of work, I ask what other forms can hold memory when photography cannot.

Through these works, I try to recreate, relive, and reconcile with what cannot be recovered. The Presence of an Absence becomes a quiet meditation on grief, memory, loss, and familial bonds—and an invitation to look beyond what can be pictured, towards what remains.

On view until 1 November at TRI Art & Culture. If you’re in Kolkata , you should see it!

Story time.

27 years of my life, and 15 of those went to school. 15 years of being told I was nothing. Every bad grade, every time I didn’t fit in, it was thrown back at me. I grew up hearing, “let’s see where you get with these marks.” And for a long time, I believed them. My confidence just disappeared. I really thought something was wrong with me.

So when I stepped back into academics years later, I was honestly terrified. I thought I’d fail again. But this time, the difference was I was in classes I actually cared about, doing things that mattered to me. And suddenly it clicked. It was never me. It was the teachers, the system, the subjects that didn’t belong to me. I wasn’t bad at everything. I just hadn’t found what I was good at.

And now to see people show up. They came to see my work, to sit with it. That outcast kid in school wouldn’t have believed this moment. I still hate maths, but this feels like the biggest win. That 12-year-old me finally has her faith back.

The show’s on view till Sept 15th. Go see it!

For the second edition of 🌧️ Monsoon Rooms, two distinct spaces gradually took shape across TRI Art & Culture, each inviting a different way of experiencing what we remember, carry, and make space for.

On the ground floor, Vriddhi (Grey) (@cigarettegreys)’s The Presence of an Absence came together through photographs, scent, sculpture, text, and personal letters, each element finding its place within an intimate landscape of memory and loss.

Upstairs, Breath Work(s) unfolded more quietly, with Hansika Mangwani’s (@hansika_mangwani) slowly shifting light works transforming the gallery into a space for rest, reflection, and simply being.

Before these rooms could be experienced, there was the work of making them: unpacking, installing, testing light and scent, positioning works, revisiting details, moving things around, and making the many small decisions that eventually recede into the finished exhibition.

Making of a Season offers a glimpse into the people, processes, and moments behind bringing 🌧️ Monsoon Rooms to life.

Presented by TRI Art & Culture in association with KCT Group CSR.

So, I’ll tell you what we do in an art residency 🤸🏻‍♀️ ->

Step 1: Arrive with a practice

Step 2: immediately forget what the practice is

Step 3: find the studio

Step 4: stare at your work

Step 5: Stare at the walls. The walls will tell you nothing.

Step 6: runaway from your work

Step 7: call all of this research

Step 8: Sometimes when someone asks what are you researching? Say “I am responding to the site”

Step 9: Engage with the site

Step 10: move things and call it installation.

Step 11: Take a photo of you with the palace.

Step 12: There is a rat

Step 13: Move things again and call it revision.

Step 14: Nobody knows what this means

Step 15: look concerned

Step 16: Plan a meeting

Step 17: Attend a meeting

Congratulations! you’ve completed a residency. taken in City Palace, Jaipur by @cigarettegreys

By returning to a house I visited every summer as a child, I encountered a space that was both familiar and estranged. As I wandered through the house with my great-grandmother, 55 years of age and experience separating us, I became almost childlike. I opened cupboards I’d never thought to open before, pulled out forgotten objects, and asked endless questions.

One afternoon, while walking into one of the rooms, I noticed a framed photograph on the wall. I couldn’t believe I had never really looked at it before.
“Who is this? I know the woman on the right is you.”
She looked up at the photograph almost instinctively. “That’s my mother-in-law,” she said, pointing to the woman in the centre. “And that’s her elder daughter-in-law. When we decided to leave the joint family home and live independently, this is what I brought with me.”

The photograph is dated 1955. Growing up, I had become accustomed to seeing framed portraits of men occupying the most visible spaces in family homes – grandfathers, fathers, patriarchs whose images affirmed lineage and inheritance. Yet the only portrait displayed in my maternal great-grandmother’s house belonged entirely to women. Three generations. No men. This was something quietly radical.
