Monitoring the health of wild animals has always been a challenge, mostly because traditional methods can be invasive and stressful.

So what if we could track diseases in dolphins just by analyzing their breath?🐬

For decades, the Arctic's story has largely been told through a single season. ❄️

Summer, with easier field conditions, has long defined what we know about the Arctic. Now, an international team has spent an entire year in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, sampling the same fjord week after week through the polar night, the spring bloom, and beyond. 🏞️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀, 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. And CIIMAR is very proud to be part of this team!

If we only monitor the Arctic in summer, we risk misreading how it's changing, and missing the shifts that climate change is already setting in motion.

Microplastics are everywhere; we all know that by now.

But just when it feels like we’ve heard it all… another unsettling discovery surfaces.

This time, scientists have found that some fish are being born with microplastics already in their bodies. 🐟

Yes, you read it right. Before they even begin feeding.

Science was back on the agenda at Serralves! 🔬

At the latest “Conversas com Ciência” session at Serralves, the CIIMAR researcher Joana Reis Almeida revealed some of the secrets behind the surfaces of marine organisms and showed how nature can inspire the development of greener technologies to tackle the challenges of the future.

Na última sessão das “Conversas com Ciência”, em Serralves, a investigadora do CIIMAR Joana Reis Almeida revelou alguns segredos sobre superfícies de organismos marinhos e mostrou como a natureza pode inspirar o desenvolvimento de tecnologias mais ecológicas para enfrentar os desafios do futuro.

More than 110 kg of waste and 1 326 cigarette butts were collected during the 4th edition of the 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗽! 🏖️ 🚯

The initiative once again brought science and the community together to tackle marine litter and microplastics, with the beach cleanup accompanied by several environmental awareness activities. The event ended with an evening of stargazing. 🌙

Mais de 110 kg de resíduos e 1 326 pontas de cigarro foram recolhidos durante a quarta edição do 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗽! 🏖️ 🚯

A iniciativa voltou a juntar ciência e comunidade em torno do combate ao lixo marinho e aos microplásticos, com uma limpeza de praia acompanhada por várias atividades de sensibilização ambiental. O evento terminou com um momento noturno de observação do céu.

CIIMAR has secured 15 new positions in the 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗖𝗧 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘂𝘀 (𝗖𝗘𝗘𝗖) 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The result represents an average success rate of 20.8%, above the national rate of 13.5% published by FCT.

The new positions span six scientific evaluation panels, which reflects the diversity of research at CIIMAR, namely Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Agri-food Biotechnology; Architecture, Urban Planning, Design, and Cultural Heritage; Biological Sciences; Environmental Sciences; Environmental Engineering and Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology; and Health Sciences.

Em outubro, poderás visitar a exposição “Anfíbios, uma pata na água, outra na terra” no CMIA Matosinhos e participar em várias atividades.

Entre a programação do mês, destaca-se mais uma edição da @biomaratona, com uma saída de campo à Praia da Agudela para explorar a biodiversidade da zona entre-marés e conhecer algumas das suas principais ameaças. 🌊

Haverá também mais uma sessão do Café com Ciência, integrada na sua série de seminários, e um webinar dedicado à biodiversidade, ecologia e alterações climáticas nos habitats aquáticos de montanha, com o caso do Parque Natural de Montesinho em destaque.

Many people associate CIIMAR’s work with the Ocean, but we also carry out a great deal of research in freshwater ecosystems. That’s why World Rivers Day is also a date worth marking at CIIMAR. 💧

At CIIMAR, we study these ecosystems, the species that depend on them, and how human activities affect their health and long-term viability.

São várias as pessoas que associam o trabalho do CIIMAR ao Oceano. Mas também fazemos muita investigação em ecossistemas de água doce. Por isso, o 𝗗𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝗼𝘀 também é uma data nossa.💧

No CIIMAR, estudamos estes ecossistemas, as espécies que deles dependem e os efeitos das atividades humanas na sua viabilidade.
