The mighty Silvertone 1482. As you look through the photos you can see some engineering upgrades over the iconic Fender Tweed Deluxe. 1) it has tremolo. 2) it has discrete tone stacks on each channel that interact. 3) This cross wires just like any 3 or 4 input Fender Tweed Amplifier, (see photo) but with the improvement of a higher gain "MIC" channel 4) This has a multi tap output transformer with a 4 ohm tap and an 8 ohm tap. 5) 12" Alnico Speaker Fisher 4ohm , (although a few came with C12R Jensen's 8 ohm). 6) Quality America tubes. 7) Price $$$ I paid $65.00 for the one currently being serviced. 8) Lightweight the cabinet is actually a pressed pulp paper like substance.. 21lbs total which can never get wet or it stinks. 9) real wooden cabinets available aftermarket. 10) 15 to 16 watts with modern wall voltages. The cabinets have different tolex.
While the 5E3 Deluxe is known for it's wonderful compression into saturation envelope via it's simplicity in design. It is this simplicity in design that limits it's utility in varying situations.. a one trick pony of sorts. Amps like the 1482 silvertone, the tweed Gibson GA-20T and 1964 Ampeg R12R-B offer a wider range on tonal choices when used properly.
Here's the real mind blower.. Using the 2026 VG Price guide. You can purchase an excellent condition example of all 3 amps, (the Silvertone 1482, Gibson GA-20T and Ampeg R12R-B), for 20% to 25% the cost of an excellent condition Fender 5E3 Deluxe. Quite frankly all 3 amps under proper usage can surpass the capabilities of the Deluxe especially the R12R-B.. The GA 20T uses a pentode pre-amp tube as well as 12AY7A. So it can sound exactly like a tweed deluxe/ tremolux or a real monster either crosswired or directly into the pentode. Fender Amps of this era are extraordinarily limited in versatility.. The dealer answer, " well just buy effects to alter your sound". So you want me to spend $15k for a 5E3 Deluxe and then spend thousands more on pedals board to get reverb, trem and overdrive OR I can spend $800 on a R12R-B. taken in Fullerton, California by @cinco.gato

Top 5E8 Fender Tweed Twin. Bottom 5F8 Fender Tweed Twin. Exclusive to the Fender Tweed Twin prior to the 5F8vis the 4 Tube Pre-amp with a dedicated gain stage for each input. The advantage is that you don't jumper the input on the 5E8. You use splitters or "Y" cords and plug directly in. With all 4 gain stages via two 12AY7A it's basically a tube screamer easily driving the power section into saturation. The 5F8 works like every other multi input Fender with only one 12AY7A driving like a deluxe, baasman etc. The 5F8 also has an intermediate section of a 12AX7, the 5E8 uses a 12AY7A allowing you to increase gain by putting in a 12AT7, 5751 or 12AX7 adding drive to taste. taken in Fullerton, California by @cinco.gato
