Back in August, I made the blindfolds for @mongtongband ’s performance @taiwanesewaves in New York. The process began with sourcing vintage silk scarves, followed by dyeing, testing colors, finishing the edges, and hand-weaving the “knots” at each end with wool yarn.
.
For me, the making became another way of listening; taking in their music, internalizing it, and letting it reappear in another form. Rather than illustrating the sound, I wanted to translate what I heard into color, texture, touch, and something that could exist physically on the body.
.
From sound to fabric, and eventually back to the stage. It was such a fun process, and a completely different way for me to experience their music.

Watching Alex Zhang Hungtai @lastlizard808 performed with different musicians tonight reminded me of something he said when I interviewed him in 2023:

“The ultimate goal is to be able to express myself and do something constructive, no matter the situation I’m in. Therefore, I can convert it into a mutually beneficial idea and opinion when I feel that I have reached a specific state of practice, no matter who I meet or what condition I’m in.”

It still resonates. The set he performed tonight with @ravenchcn and @tashidorjiiii was magnificent!

書寫一個對自己像歸屬般的城市非常困難。當記憶交疊或各種不同事物的發生相互混雜，沒有地方比那裡更像家，但同時也令人感到破碎，一切變得無以名狀，於是選擇安靜。

2017 年，是一段緩慢卻必須的與許多人事物道別的一年，同時也過得恍恍惚惚。與重病不久後離世的繼父和解，為準備去美國開始新生活而收拾並濃縮自己人生的所有物；總想著把握時間與好朋友相見，一起去看表演。還很衝地快閃大港開唱，唯一有印象的是許瀧尹拔了一面大港杆旗讓我帶去美國留念。那年也是我第一次看 @manicsheepband 的現場演出，如果沒記錯的話，應該是大港前一天，他們和 Ogre You Asshole 在 The Wall 共演的專輯發行派對。但我那天到底看了什麼？時至今日，腦中存留的仍是半斷片的影像與聲音碎片，有些畫面根本是一片白噪音。說穿了，其實是在入場前不小心喝得半醉，看到熟悉的朋友都當作沒看見，只想躲起來，靠在角落「瞪鞋」，實實在在讓音樂包覆自己。回想起來，也許是因為喝醉，那晚完全用身體在感受音樂；吉他破音、時進時退的鼓聲和主唱聽似輕飄但語氣有靭度的歌聲，淹沒了我，卻完全沒有喘不過氣。離開 The Wall 後，記得在台北街上走了好長一段路，想著那五年在台北的工作、生活與片刻，覺得自己好愛這個城市，捨不得離開。

來美國快十年了，Manic Sheep 今年發行的新專輯《Rewind 2014》也與上一張相隔近十年。最奇妙的是新專輯有幾首歌，例如〈Mushroom〉和〈Do I Have to Stay Awake〉，像某一種特定時光的回憶催化劑，將 2013、2014 年那段看一堆表演的記憶連同聲影一一喚回。〈Reset〉的工業感聲響與都會疏離感的歌聲一出，Kim Gordon、Blonde Redhead 和紐約後龐克場景如掠影拂過耳心。《Rewind 2014》驗證了音樂足以跨越時間和空間：人在布魯克林卻好像可以聞到台北街道的氣味，即使悶熱難耐也覺得美好。

音樂讓人找回靈魂，似乎是真的，但或許要過很久很久之後，才能看見自己靈魂的輪廊。

Happy upcoming birthday to myself. And deeply thanks to all the friends who love and support me.

It was in the second half of 2024 that my life quietly slipped into “survival mode.” This year has felt like rock bottom: living on edge, counting every coin, worrying about next month’s rent. When there’s no work, a simple walk to clear the head becomes a “great getaway.”
．
Whenever a gig comes in, showing up to work feels genuinely joyful. Even just sewing a sleeve or running errands for a designer can feel like a small miracle—work still exists, and somehow it’s landed here. The gaps in between are their own kind of panic, the kind that makes selling everything seem reasonable. On late–night waves of anxiety, even the pretty clothes look like trash, fit to be thrown out or burned. Sometimes half–finished pieces get unpicked for no reason other than the conviction that everything, including their maker, is useless.

For more than a year, my moods have swung back and forth like this. When anxiety curdles into bitterness, or the mind feels close to giving out, it’s time to disappear for a while: practice guitar, sketch, lie in bed doing nothing, or wander outside and empty the head. There was a stretch thick with anger and a sense of injustice, always circling the thought, “There are no grand dreams left, so why is life still this hard?” Usually, after half a day, the discouragement slowly melts away. There’s been a kind of training in how to find small pockets of joy while living in survival mode. Somehow, it’s already 2026.

This year, my wish is to get out of survival mode, save a little money, and go back to Taiwan to be with family for a while. Growing older has always been feeling good; there’s a sense of becoming stronger, and, strangely enough, a growing fondness for this self. by @cindernarasky

和 shame 主唱 Steen 對談真的有如沐春風感，雖然才 27 歲，談吐卻帶著老靈魂的沈穩。shame 是我少數做過二次專訪的樂團之一（另外兩團是 SWANS 和 WWWW落差草原），也許因為是第二次訪問，聊起來格外親切，問題也能更直接。Steen 不只回答利落，還是個專注的聆聽者。從他們出道就喜歡到現在，去英國時還特地跑去 Windmill 那邊走走，踩點他們以前出沒的地方。偶爾很想給還這麼愛音樂的自己摸頭，世界正爛，幸好還有音樂的存在。

If I were to describe my state this year in a single word, it would be uncertainty. Not being stuck, but moving while questioning direction. Life did not stop, and neither did I, though the outline ahead remained unclear.

Within this state, repetition took shape. The text I returned to most was Eternal Current Events, a collection of Chris Marker’s early notes and essays compiled by Jackson Smith. There were two or three pages I found myself rereading again and again. Marker writes:

Cats are Gods. The most widespread and accessible form of God. That’s beyond question. But might we not better understand their duty to remain invisible? The unremitting effort they put towards taking an interest in mice, in balls of yarn, in other kitties too, as a way of making us respect their anonymity as gods? This exhibition and its presentations come out looking to us like one gigantic blunder, like the disguised servant who says “Your Royal Highness” out loud to his disguised master.

There is something in this insistence on anonymity—the deliberate attention to the trivial and the everyday—that made me pause and reconsider my own position. Some things may not be meant to be named too quickly.

This was also the year I actually entered film production in the States—features, shorts, and costume work. Across different sets, I often heard: “We are making a movie.” and “It takes a village to make a movie.” Being inside the process, those words became almost literal.

Looking back, uncertainty remains. What I know is that I did not stop. Long days on set left their traces.

D’Angelo left this world this year, and Black Messiah became the album I listened to most. When I missed home—when I thought of Taiwan—I kept returning to Shallow Levée’s Endless Playlist.

These repetitions—listening, watching, thinking—were how uncertainty moved this year. The pace was slow, but it did not stop. I hope next year, I can slowly move out of it. by @cindernarasky
